I can finally talk about this, 3 years later... github.com/tailscale/ta... It's a library + CLI tool that's like netcat, but over Tailscale's data plane without any control plane (no accounts, no dependence on Tailscale the company, all open source) WireGuard + NAT traversal without IP addresses.

Look what just arrived, Observability Engineering (2nd) is absolutely huge. @charity.wtf you were not joking. Time to borrow a few columnar ideas for my winter project. #observability
A book on a wooden desktop. The second edition of "Observability Engineering" with a cover featuring a fox (?). The book itself is quite thick at around 600 pages.

Recently I got on the #eBPF #profiling hype train and I had so much fun that I wrote a little something. I wanted to spread the word about #opentelemetry & ended up with too much txt even after massive cuts #observability #go borismarinov.de/writing/otel... Comments and jabs welcome here.

It really does feel like GitHub is getting worse by the day. Now I regularly get bogus "invalid value" label errors when the label clearly exists and works.

Ive been writing about the less obvious challenges I encountered while working on a #Garage controller for storage bucket provisioning. Too much content but I need to get back to actual development. Here it is: borismarinov.de/writing/k8s-... #homelab #selfhosted #golang Comments & feedback here ^^

Microsoft Silently Patched a CVSS 9.9 Privilege Escalation in Azure Backup for AKS
CERT/CC validated a critical privilege escalation in Azure Backup for AKS (VU#284781). Microsoft rejected it, then silently patched it without assigning a CVE or notifying customers.

The OpenTelemetry Profiles Signal is now in Alpha 🚀 This is a big step towards making Continuous Profiling in production available to the whole industry. And given the rise of AI coding, this couldn't come at a better moment in time ... 🧵

The only good thing about all this is that it has brought to my attention that the Greenland flag frickin’ rules. #Erfalasorput
The flag of Greenland. The bottom half is red and the top half white, and offset from the center there is a circular design with the bottom half of the circle white and the top half red. It is meant to symbolize ice caps and the sun setting over the ocean.

Can’t see any reason for sw engineers to choose Windows with this weird direction they are doubling down on So odd because Microsoft has building dev tools in their DNA… their OS doesn’t look like anything a builder who wants OS control could choose Mac or Linux it is for devs

Is there an European #cloud provider which offers managed messaging solutions? Deploying w\ helm on k8s is not good enough. I hope I missed some, but basically looking at the usual #eu suspects, none seems to offer #k8s plus managed (!) messaging platforms + private networking (+ some form of iac)

Coincidentally read this part of Terry Pratchett's "Guards! Guards!" over lunch. (My first Pratchett book.) Here, the soon-to-be-former heads of the city are realizing there's a new monster in charge, each wishing one of the others would stand in protest. I heard Pratchett was incisive, but dang. 👀
“They avoided one another's faces, for fear of what they might see mirrored there. Each man thought: one of the others is bound to say something soon, some protest, and then I'll murmur agreement, not actually say anything, I'm not stupid as that, but definitely murmur very firmly, so that the others will be in no doubt that I thoroughly disapprove, because at a time like this it behooves all decent men to nearly stand up and be almost heard...
No one said anything. The cowards, thought each man.”
― Terry Pratchett, Guards! Guards!

Brexit didn’t result in UK industry stepping up domestic production to meet demand, or consumers switching to UK products once the UK began trading with Europe on 3rd party terms.

The current situation, by which I mean dumpster fire, is a perfect chance for European cloud providers to double down and invest in their ecosystem. Managed kubernetes is a decent start, but after searching for 20 minutes I have nfc whether they offer a decent messaging platform + IAM + API/SDKs.

First toot of the year had to be about #MicrosoftTeams :( So apparently in 2025 there is no proper (non-PWA) app available for #linux desktop. At least Firefox got screen sharing support recently. This is truly a v2 experience 😕
