On this day in 1861, a Czech Jewish man was born. On the 6 Jul 1942 he was deported to Theresienstadt with his wife and on the 19 Oct 1942 to Treblinka extermination camp where he was murdered on arrival. His wife perished in Theresienstadt. His name was Jan Hutter

Nate Sheets’ campaign bus stopped outside my elderly parents’ home in Lampasas and repeatedly blasted its horn for several minutes. I signed up to run for public office. My parents didn’t. "Moonshine Kate" Carson was born 117 years ago today. A pioneer of Old Timey music, she began recording for Okeh Records in 1925 at the age of 16, and became a radio and recording star on the strength of her singing, banjo playing, and comedy. She passed away in 1992.

#ResistanceRoots Today in history, 1957: President Eisenhower apologizes to Ghanaian Finance Minister Komla Agbeli Gbedemah, who was denied service in a segregated restaurant. It was one of many incidents involving African dignitaries and a factor in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. /1

Ghanaian Finance Minister Komla Abela Gbedemah (left) meets with President Dwight D. Eisenhower (center) and Vice President Richard Nixon (right) at the White House on Oct. 10, 1957. The meeting was arranged after Gbedemah was refused indoor service at a Howard Johnson’s restaurant in Dover, Del. President Eisenhower issued a formal apology and invited Gbedemah to the White House for breakfast to address the incident. He and Nixon expressed regret and discussed financial assistance for Ghana’s Akosombo Dam project. Following the incident, Howard Johnson’s management instructed the Dover restaurant to serve all customers regardless of race. However, Howard Johnson’s operated largely through a franchise model, and individual owners often adhered to local Jim Crow laws or deep-seated regional customs. 10 October 1944 | SS detained four female Jewish prisoners: Ella Gartner, Róża Robota, Regina Safir & Estera Wajsblum. They were involved in smuggling explosives that were used by the Sonderkommando prisoners during their revolt on 7 October 1944. The women were hanged on 6 January 1945.
