I can really relate to this. You finally have time to play -> update -> launcher update -> compiling shaders -> ... 🙄

I was really tempted to reply with "this is incorrect, i'll explain in my second post" but I got a hold of myself 😉

Embedded dev: we only have a few bits to represent the fill state anyway. So we just use a representation that cannot represent 50% anyway. Problem solved by default

I don't see the issue. The cats are comfy in their new bed. I don't know what that blue thing is. Maybe just filling

It seems to me that the more focus is spent on the "core gameplay loop" the higher the chance the gameplay ends up being "that one thing" you do for X hours.

I kinda remember those times and even back then you still got nothing done. Your computer didn't multitask but you did. Endless stacks of paper on your desk and a ringing phone.

German culture does not stop at ttrpg design but crosses over.

The role of the GM is also part of the actual game design when it comes to ttrpgs. Anyway, when it comes to Pathfinder 2e where balance is clearly paramount in design, that failure rate was probably intended.

Rules in ttrpgs are just acmeans to an end, to facilitate actual play. They don't matter that much on their own.

𝘉𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘉𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘺𝘔𝘰𝘰𝘯𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘥 @blueberrymoonshard.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I would say Rule 0 is not a necessary evil but integral to ttrpgs.

A lot of starting DMs should actually read the DMs guide, where this is stated plainly.

There is another german one Splittermond, which is just as overly complex. And a third one Midgard (not the campaign setting from Kobold press) which is quite old but still has a small but dedicated fanbase. Midgard is known for its excessively detailed rules

I would not say that this is true, games with obsessive minutae do have their fans. While the german ttrpg The Dark Eye is infamous for having very detailed, overly complex rules, it is only the best known one.

I think it lacks a perception roll and a navigation skill check after every dex check to keep going in the right direction

I like to have an idea how valuable a consumeable is. Is that Potion of X like one of 5 in the entire game or can I buy as many as I need, so I know if I can burn it on a random encouter or should save it

Things a character is competent at don't have uncertain outcomes. So no rolling and the probabilities don't matter there.

𝘉𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘉𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘺𝘔𝘰𝘰𝘯𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘥 @blueberrymoonshard.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I think you look to much on the mechanics and disregard the wider context. Rolls in ttrpgs only mean anything in an actual play session. There, rolls should only be used when the outcome is in question.

𝘉𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘉𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘺𝘔𝘰𝘰𝘯𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘥 @blueberrymoonshard.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
In my view, a roll that allows to take 10, or even 20 which was iirc was a thing in 3.x qhen time didn't matter, is a roll that is unneceassry in the first place. Just use thresholds in the first place. Or as a GM just let succeed and keep the game flowing

If your GM makes you roll for mundane tasks akin to pouring water, than they do it wrong, plain and simple. Don't use a mechanic meant for simulating risk and uncertainty for situations that don't have that in a meaningful way

Many people don't understand probability very well and many of them are resistant to having it explained to them. This leads some designers to creating mechanics that work like the player's instinctive (read: fucking wrong) understanding of probability, further confusing everyone.

Well there is reason ttrpg characters usually don't have jobs and have adventure 😉 On a more serious note, I think rolls should happen less often in ttrpgs then they do. Only when there is risk, so stuff that routine for characters should not require rolls.

I don't really like it when unpredictability can be planned or optimized away so much to become meaningless. But I get that this is a GM's view. From a players perspective, when bad things happen due to bad luck, it can feel really grating

I think there is a quite some differences what we want from dice rolls in rpgs. I want when rolls happen that there is always some uncertainty and risk. And I want combat to be dangerous and to certain degrees unpredictable. So, some swinginess is not a design flaw for me.

Disco Elysium made me want to fail rolls sometimes because failure often put you in a narratively more interesting place

I personally don't like how in 2d10 system bonuses have different effects on the probability depending on the difficulty you want to hit. I like the flat a +1 means 5% in 1d20 much more. It makes adhoc decisions when gm and homebrewing much easier.

It is not about opinions really but about experiences. I would take complaints about artificial difficulty serious and not usually assume bad faith. Because it is a sign that the game could not invoke the experience intended by the dev.

Games are ultimately subjective and about feeling, in the end only the experience matters not the objective design

It really depends on the game. Some feel sluggish at lower fps where some do not. And then there are the "gems" which feel sluggish even at high fps
