For 3 years in the 2000s, I was a virtual shut-in, living my life almost entirely online. I didn't go out, rarely socialized, and even stopped bathing. This is the story of how I got out, and my fears for a generation barreling headlong towards the same fate. open.substack.com/pub/knifepoi...

Maybe really big publishers won’t care for a while, but smaller/indie presses fucking around with AI covers will soon learn that losing a few hundred readers is actually a huge loss. Saving a few bucks on cover art is nothing if you can’t sell the book.

I want to do an entire Hockeypocalypse book in this style, but apparently "this series has sold over 1000 copies with no support" is not a strong enough argument for the publishers that can afford a rate that lets me colour like this and also live.

Still puzzled by publications that use AI art. If it's cost, you can create quite good illustrations yourself with a little practice & work. And moral angle aside there's something so unserious & insulting about it. Like going to the trouble of taking off your pants only to piss on your own feet

My biggest issue with AI evangelism in our industry is that it treats creativity like a problem to be solved, and not an adventure to be had.

It's #PortfolioDay again! I'm Jeff Martin, an illustrator and cartoonist. I've had 14 graphic novels published, and also done #ttrpg writing and illustration, with recent forays into video games. I'm looking for a lit agent, and also welcome illustration and comics work.

This is an absolutely terrific summary of something we have written about often: The way that, despite a nominally "human first" focus, Google's curation and presentation of the internet has distorted it toward a focus on machine readability and empty, boring, unhelpful marketing practices

Seth Dickinson spitting fire in his Clarkesworld interview. Let's hope we can prevent Bluesky from turning out the same way.
But that kind of experimentation stopped feeling tenable for a lot of reasons. And the short fiction community, the people you’d be most likely to connect with, were all on Twitter, which I think is caustic to any kind of community or moral competence. Why would you want to connect with a community on Twitter? The worst thing that can happen to a writer is getting attention from their colleagues on Twitter. If you’re on Twitter, you live in constant fear of Twitter, which is why you keep going back, because the fear is addictive.

I think it is a pretty good rule for writers, especially new writers, to distrust anyone with an active Twitter account, because it represents a kind of passive consent to behavior modification by an algorithm designed to abuse people into engagement. Even if they have a good reason they need to be there. (Sorry to all my friends with Twitters.)

BURGERPunk: The RPG is now available! I am blown away that this weird, funny game came out of a goofy discussion on the Rite Gud discord. preview.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/4...
Welcome to New McDonaldland. It is the year 1997 and America has been destroyed. Fractured fast food alliances that once controlled empires fight over the shells of ruined cities destroyed in the Cola Wars while syrup-addicted survivors struggle to get by. The landscape is overrun with aggressive strains of high-fructose corn, and the mysterious Living Meat has spread throughout the ecosystem, consuming and replacing more conventional fauna. And that's not even getting into the roving gangs of blood-thieves, burger-clown cultists, fried chicken militias and Renn Faire rejects. It might not be the apocalypse anyone expected, but it's the one that happened. Welcome to the world of BURGERPunk: The RPG.

With the internet age it's really not that hard for someone to crowdfund and pay to have 1-10k copies of a book printed. If you want to only give me 10-18% of the cover price for my book/comic, then it's YOUR job to earn it. I need you for the reach, not to get the books printed

100%. but part of the issue is that the modern internet & media ecosystem is designed to penalize it. social media emphasizes quick hits; google search is built for instant gratification; people have been taught NOT to browse or read. if it made more money than publishing trash, websites would do it
