Please read and comment (deadline Oct. 9). The draft addendum reduces the menhaden cap by 50%. The dramatic die-off of osprey in the Chesapeake bay area in recent years is due to starvation, largely caused by decrease in available food sources (esp. menhaden). asmfc.org/.../atlantic...

Not only is illustration art, WSJ has artfully illustrated that no matter how rich you get, you’ll never be accepted in old money circles. They think they make culture. We all do, for better and worse.

Sometimes your grad students come back from the field with a tattoo of their study subjects* Since grasshopper sparrows have individually unique songs, we know which one this is (YBGX, if I remember correctly - she decided not to include its color bands) *(I did not ask her to do this!... :-) )

Just starting to get most of our peppers now. The ones on the left are jalapenos. The peppers on the right are Carolina reapers, 340x hotter. They've been described as having "a sweet, fruity taste immediately supplanted by the sensation of molten lava." Really enjoyable, in other words... :-)

The next administration needs to make an absolute priority finding a way to put in place more permanent protections, so that a vindictive, narcissistic, uneducated future executive and his/her administration are never capable of doing such harm to our country again.

Classic "projection", honed over decades by Republican operatives like Roy Cohn and Carl Rove, now embraced by Trump & co: Accuse your opponent of the very thing (in this case, antisemitism) of which you yourself are guilty to tar them & immunize yourself. Putin has used this tactic w/ Ukraine.

Not back then. At least there was no straightforward way to do it as far as I knew. Voting is perhaps our most fundamental right in this country. It shouldn't be hard. I was fortunate to go to school in a state that let me register and vote as a student in my new place of residence.

When I was a student I was poor and didn't have a car. I could only vote in the college town where I lived, or not at all. Also, at that point the college town was my community. I never returned to the area where I was born, and frankly didn't really have a connection there.

Plus, as almost anyone will tell you, if you really want to learn something, teach it. So, my advice would be to stop taking classes, get research projects underway/finished, and if something piques your curiosity find a way to TA it or offer it yourself. :-)

As a biology grad student, we generally stopped after passing prelims / qualifiers. Unless there was something special being offered. It can be hard to get out of the taking classes habit. But important if you want to get research done, and create your own career.

Clearly, Republicans are unfamiliar with the concept of dishabituation. Once this show "trial" is over, folks will immediately go back to forgetting about Fauci, and their interest in Trump's domestic and foreign policy failures will come roaring back to the front burner with a vengeance.

IT’S TIME FOR BLUE STATES TO FIGHT BACK. HARD. Why are we funding a federal government that openly punishes states for not voting for Trump? The Trump administration admitted in court it canceled nearly $8 billion in clean energy grants because the states didn’t vote for him. Blue states only.

I hate that we have two Dakotas. Republicans got greedy for new states in the 1880s and we're still paying for that a century and a half later. Two states that, when combined, have the same population as The Bronx. They shouldn't get four senators.

One person (the president) should not be able to arbitrarily reduce the size of national monuments. That power should be taken away from the executive branch.

I've been on the national mall at least a dozen times attending events: folklife festivals, book festivals, musical events, rallies, protests, etc. These are BY FAR the smallest crowds I've ever seen. There are more tourists on an average day than the number milling around at "Freedom 250."

They're also very likely in their sensitive phase for song learning right now. We were cued into that a day or two before they fledged as the male suddenly started singing a lot again. (Perhaps also to lure them out? - though it seems he should have waited a bit if so...)

Yes, that's an owl box. They didn't have many options for re-nesting as the female was already laying when they were evicted from the bluebird box. By the time we caught it they were quickly building a new nest here. Perhaps the large box and opening contributed to the early fledge.

Bernie Lohr @blohr.bsky.social · 17/06/2026
Yesterday our bluebirds fledged. There were three. Four if you count the egg that remained in the old nest after the house sparrows evicted them. They probably fledged a day or two early, and had some trouble flying, though by the end of the day at least one had made it high up into the trees.

I'd be in favor of breaking in now and sabotaging the facility. If we suffer a near-extinction event, it would be better if whatever intelligence eventually emerges from that isn't us. Because we'll likely have been the cause.
