BlockSky 3.4.0 released! Blocking just got a lot faster for people with large block lists. A blocking run that could previously take ~5,300 requests before the first block now takes about 12. And importantly: performance no longer gets worse as your block list grows. 🚀

We're also working on a larger improvement that eliminates the need to scan your entire blocklist in the first place. That should make BlockSky dramatically faster for exactly the people who use it most: people who block a lot. 4/4

We've now shipped a fix that makes this protection fail closed, if we can't reliably determine who should be protected, the block doesn't proceed. 3/4

For heavy blockers that could take 67 seconds on average, and some requests were hitting our 5-minute timeout 😬 While investigating, found something important: if the check that protects your mutuals failed, BlockSky could mistake that failure for "you have no mutuals" and continue blocking 2/4

We found something interesting while investigating reports from BlockSky users with large blocklists. The reported issue was profiles taking forever to load or not loading at all. We found BlockSky was checking your entire blocklist before loading a profile. 1/4

A block is just a record being created on your account. That can be done even if one already exists. That’s likely what’s happening here. Notifications are sent each time a record is created.

Interesting. Those notifications definitely make it look like the block is being removed somewhere and then applied again. Listifications might be worth looking into.

Just to clarify: Blocksky does not cycle blocks. Blocksky can block accounts, but it has no functionality to unblock accounts Whatever caused the repeated blocking, unblocking, and re-blocking described in Bluesky's suspension notice could not have been Blocksky alone.

Just a quick clarification 💙 This wasn’t a BlockSky bug. We’ve never had an issue where BlockSky created unexpected blocks or blocked accounts without user action. Seems like there was confusion around interpreting block relationships, but no automated blocking happened on our end

Update: Quick Login (OAuth) is working normally again. ✅ Earlier today, our connection to Bluesky’s login service was dropped, causing some logins to hang. We shipped a change so future issues fail quickly with a clear message instead of hanging App Password login remains available

Also worth noting. Other PDSs like latinsky may have their own login systems and rate limits. There's not a lot we can do about those, unfortunately

That might be related to this recent fix. Prior to it, it may have seemed like it was blocking but wasn't. This tightened the error and fixed it. We'll be monitoring this over the next few days, so if it persists, let us know bsky.app/profile/bloc...

Fixed issue reported by @tomalak.bsky.social 🫡 Some users using Bluesky app passwords could get logged out mid-blocking session if token refreshes failed or rotated unexpectedly We now retry temp failures automatically, keep sessions synced during long runs, and handle expired sessions cleanly

We had that issue in v1, but it was fixed in 2. That said, you're right that it isn't handling that if you're seeing that error. I've created an issue to look into it this over the weekend. Appreciate the insight

It's not us preventing anyone from usage, we don't do that. It's the platform, in this case eurosky, that enforces it on their end. We have reached out to @eurosky.social many days ago, but haven't heard back. Maybe @sonoptikon.eurosky.social will have better luck

If the rate was exceeded, it's because of eurosky. We don't control rate limits so you will have to wait until they lift it on your end.

Seems like Eurosky has same/similar rate limits as Bluesky. After ~1000 blocks, the PDS appears to temporarily throttle requests, which can cause BlockSky to stop or throw an error until the limit clears. Not a BlockSky-specific issue, these limits are enforced by their respective platoforms.
