I was sure that entering the adult world I would leave behind the social and structural dynamics of high school and college forever, and the extent to which they still linger in the world around me even as I enter middle age pisses me off.

I do like it when someone who you find annoying but feel obligated to listen to for various reasons says something so dumb you are freed from ever having to care about what they say again.

In some ways this is a perfect Violet joke, in that it is pretty inscrutable but if you do manage to weave through the labyrinth it is also not funny.

I don't understand why everyone is talking about a blue Nami. Her name is Nojiko!
emily litella from saturday night live, played by gilda radner. a brown-haired lady in a red sweater with messy hair and glasses. her things was comically mixing up words, like violins on television or presidential erections. they stopped doing this bit 7 years before i was born but i know about it anyway and i don't really know how.

Some of this is goombaposting but I do think there is a real problem of desire versus reality.

A reminder that, if you believe that names given at birth are so very important, then you are obliged me to call me my legal name for the first 4 months of my life, Baby Doe.

I feel like people want perfect solutions when it comes to LLM use in fiction and none exist, so they get mad if a magazine accidentally publishes an LLM story and also mad if they are strict in trying to filter LLM stories and also mad if a writer they find sympathetic is accused of using LLMs.

(I do actually have some problems with the construction of "depression" both socially and clinically but disputes about the kablooeyness of brains is what I take issue with here)

violet allen @blipstress.bsky.social · 13h
I'm sure depression is primarily a response to material conditions for a lot of people but some of us have brains that just go kablooey sometimes.

Love how mental health awareness has gone in a circle and landed on Depression Isn't Real (woke version)

I feel like a lot of people's politics really fail to consider that, like, people are for real different and have different ideas about what is good in life

The writer has written things that aren't AI so I don't really get it.
000
violet allen @blipstress.bsky.social · 15h
Idk I do feel like AI accusations and especially consequences are targeted but on multiple occasions now I've tried to read an accused text with maximum generosity and desire to believe the author but still come away with "This is the most LLM shit possible."

Like, pathetic fallacy that goes past logic to the point of animism.

violet allen @blipstress.bsky.social · 15h
Protip: LLMs absolutely fucking love pathetic fallacy when writing fiction. One of the clearest signs something is AI if you don't have an ear for it.

I have been accused by a lot of people in my life of not believing in anything, but suddenly in the era of slop and hyper-propaganda the gal who sees the flaws in everything isn't such an evil nihilist after all, is she?

Like I'm genuinely not trying to brag or be holier than thou about this, it generally makes me insane that other people can't recognize obvious AI writing (and insist that it is impossible for anyone else to). Like, can't you hear it?

I've seen it used in critical discussions in a neutral way, just describing how certain kinds of fiction work, but it does often go to a prescriptive place.

I love you more than any other writer has ever loved you, and so I create delight for you, and for that delight to mean anything, it must transcend your language for it.
080
violet allen @blipstress.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
I feel like people have started using the language of like "reader expectations" and "contract with the reader" to justify some pretty rancid anti-art opinions.

I really wanted to live in fictional 2010s Brooklyn back in the day, just as I wanted to live in fictional 60s Paris when I was in college. But now I am old and there are no more fictional worlds to conquer.

I guess I just feel genuine pity. Like, I really do find people trying publish LLM fiction more sad than angering. You don't get much out of being a writer except self-satisfaction. If you want money or prestige, get a real job.

Actually you should read this book whether or not you care about understanding my jokes. I read it 12ish years ago it fundamentally changed how I approach writing as an artform, thus creating the Violet you all know and love today.

Lowkey LLM writing is kind of a boost to my ego. Like, you need a supercomputer to do what comes to me as easily as breathing, and it's not even actually good? My condolences.

I feel like some people are trapped in an aesthetic netherworld where they have enough taste to be a hater of bad art but not enough taste to enjoy genuinely good art.
