bird friends, can anyone help me ID this bird? I'm trying to finish my Nevada checklist from my trip last weekend but I'm absolutely stumped. #birds

🐦 Black Phoebe #123 🗺️ Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, Nevada 📷 Sony a6700 w/ Sony E 70-350mm lens #birds was happy to find another west coast bird. I was only able to snap this flycatcher at a distance, and here due to me goofing my aperture settings, I was able capture the flies in the pics too

they were the first birds I saw when I entered the park (the hummingbirds were at the gate), and they all left immediately onto their next destination as I got set up, so glad I got some shots of them! the friend I was with is from the mountains so she had never even seen any pelicans before.
The lake the pelicans were at, after they they all took off.

also if you’re ever in the area and love birds, I strongly recommend checking out the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve. aside from being beautiful and full of birds, today was their tortoise Tino’s 18th birthday, so they had a little bday party going 😭

that's really interesting considering Anil definitely knows how unpleasant and antisocial Tressie's behavior is when it happens to him

But like… why the dunk-quote with replies off? What does that do except encourage people to be assholes? It specifically precludes any meaningful conversation. It rules out the possibility that I could be acting in good faith. And it’s not hard to find plenty of evidence that I try to do so.

I had one stop by my bird feeder the other day, which I found unusual since they've mostly migrated from here and I don't really see them anymore, was a nice surprise!

They're a bit larger than the Plovers, with a distinct plumage that sets them apart. But what really IDs them is their single minded behavior to just flip everything

www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Piping... really sad, the ones I saw were in a protected state park beach, so hopefully they can bounce back here
The 2025 State of the Birds report lists Piping Plover as an Orange Alert Tipping Point species, meaning that it has lost more than 50% of its population in the past 50 years and has shown accelerated declines within the past decade. Partners in Flight estimates a global breeding population of 8,400 individuals and rates the species a 16 out of 20 on the Continental Concern Score. In the Great Lakes region, they are listed as federally Endangered and along the Atlantic Coast and Great Plains they are listed as federally Threatened.

Population declines are due to direct and unintentional harassment by people, dogs, and vehicles; destruction of beach habitat for development; predation; and changes in water levels that affect availability of nesting habitat. Conservation efforts focus on protecting nests and nesting habitats by placing exclosures around nests to reduce the risk of predation or trampling. Other conservation efforts focus on predator control, controlling human recreation near breeding sites, and restoring breeding sites such as sandbars. This has helped stabilize populations, especially along the Atlantic Coast, but the population in the Great Lakes region hasn't yet reached its stated recovery goals of 150 breeding pairs.

what was interesting to me that was there were also Ospreys perched around the trees in the dunes, close to the Hawk, but the Plovers knew the difference between when the Ospreys flew over them, as opposed to the Hawk. They scattered immediately for the Hawk (Ospreys feed primarily on fish) #birds

this Cooper's Hawk was aura farming by the plovers, definitely had bad intentions, and at one point it made a pass at them and startled them. but thankfully it missed and I didn't have to see things get too real #birds
