There was also a big movement against Discord when they had their last huge data breach with IDs and moderation info getting leaked, but that was ALSO entirely on a third party service. Not surprised that another third party was hacked, or if folks are attacking main Discord for it, either.

Part of that very downfall was how hard Roblox embraced GenAI in their workflows, particularly to shove in the face of the children making their games. Which is part of why the recommended page has only gotten worse over the last several years.

See, what I described with expression and the process of my own works is the very thing GenAI lacks. There's no learning, no stories, and frankly no nuance to generating an asset, which is the case with this spotlight world.

But, how does this all lead back to GenAI and VRC? Because GenAI conceptually is the bane of artful expression, and materially affects creators and users alike in subtle but tangibly harmful ways. Well. Sometimes not so subtly. Like with slop lining the discovery page, that's pretty rough.

Like, the design I use is intentionally subtle. Because I'm a subtle kind of persion who wants to feel pretty without artifical attention. I don't wear sleeves bc I feel phantom temperatures. My hat and tank top immediately inform you that I like cats and big stompy robots. It's all intentional.

All this to say that, art is subjective, and what makes art "good" to one person can be "bad" to another, and it depends on what we truly value in the things we surround ourselves in. But what makes that unique to VRC is how that art lets us express ourselves in ways we can't IRL.

This is why you see so many VRC worlds with random photos on the walls. Those probably aren't random, but photos that meant something to the person that put them there. And that's exactly the kind of personalization that drew me toward making my own models, and eventually to my own world.

It could be a hallmark, or simply a stylistic choice. But we always leave something behind that we see and are like, yeah, that's my shit right there. It's the creator's emotion that makes something unique, and draws people toward it in solidarity.

You might pick an avi because it looks cool or pretty or sexy, or it has a function you like, or it's funny. These are emotional responses we have to art. And there's something beautiful in that. Likewise, what people create has a spark of themself in it, almost always.

Why do we pick the avis and worlds we do? What drives creators to produce? It's art, silly. In more objective terms though, VRC is one of the best places for self expression. There's a reason it has such a dense population of trans folk and/or furries, groups who need that self expression the most.

World creation also isn't that difficult. If you just wanted a cabin with a glowy night sky, that's easy as shit to do. I fully intend on making my own home world once I have regular access to VR again. But, aren't there a million home worlds better than what I could make? Well, it depends.

More importantly, I talked to people. Learned the basics from someone who knew what they were doing and were happy to help. Yaknow, being social on the social platform. Hell, their avis were the reason I made my own, and those memories are the world to me.

But with the rooting around Creator Companion's guts I've done over the years... this stuff really isn't that hard. I made my first model, the one in my PFP and most of my public photos, with $25 and some untrained elbow grease. You don't need fancy tools to do everything, just love and care.

Did it have that impact? I'd like to think VRC responding to it was a good sign, but I've never been at the heart of VRC's community. It's always been a more visceral thing for me, meeting folks and making real friends when life makes that legitimately impossible IRL.

On the flip side, it felt nice seeing the news that followed, a big protest that could have meaningful impact by bringing the issue directly to those most likely to suffer for it- the everyday users like you and me. Big posters and edited thumbnails making a big stink about VRC's GenAI problem.

So, when I started seeing news around about an AI generated world hitting the spotlight, it was pretty painful. Yet another platform built off the backs of working indie creators, promoting content that simply wasn't made earnestly. And the many creators I follow spoke out about it, big time.

I'd posted a thread not too long ago lamenting the fatigue of having GenAI shoved down my throat at every corner. Fake ads generated for fake mobile games, fake videos, fake images, and an overall lack of trust between myself the user and the content algorithms fed to me. It's tiring, I know.

-The west (Americas, EU, etc) and Japan are pretty divided on the topic. Japanese users are far more accepting of GenAI than here. More on this later. -A protest movement started between world creators, changing banners and adding posters to their worlds and avatars noting no use of GenAI.

I'd seen a good bit of conversation around this on here, and it comes down to a few major talking points. -What the hell, VRC? -VRC staff are actually pretty okay with GenAI in the creative pipeline, much to the disappointment of the human creators that made VRC what it is today.

Well, people found out pretty quickly that the world was made with GenAI to some significant degree, the extent of which I'm not 100% on. And many people found it pretty offensive that a platform largely focused on user generated content was spotlighting AI, a specifically anti-creator thing.

Closure likely won't come, and trauma doesn't just fade so soon. But, it's all still something to learn from, for better or worse. I do think saving the depressoposting for therapy is best, though. Perhaps writing those thoughts in a doc will help you organize them? Easier to talk about then, too.

Sports are probably the most prolific and consistent source of voiced content, with clear audio thanks to their heavy attenuation. So my theory is that, the reason GenAI voices are so awful and flat, is bc they train largely off of sportscasting and podcasts. Which is hilarious to me.
