Yes, but why hasn't she lifted a finger to help the poor white Afrikaner refugees only the US has bothered to assist? Sad! /s

It reduced from two years to one in the late 80s I think - mine was in fact the last draft and I avoided it by going to university. Older brothers not so fortunate...

My family's lore has it that my great (great?) grandfather left Prussia for South Africa in the 1860s to avoid Bismarck's "blood and iron" expansion of compulsory military service. Proud to say I continued the family tradition by avoiding conscription in 1991 just before it was abolished.

This is the first weekend I can recall in yeaaaaars that there’s been no rugby on. It’s creepy and it’s weird and it needs to stop.

A lot of people don't know this, but when you brush a cat, you are legally required to show them the wad of cat hair that came off of them and tell them
"this is enough for another whole cat"

V found this claim is false. This is a well-known internet joke; there are no laws in any jurisdiction requiring pet owners to show cats their shed hair or say this phrase.

Saw Backrooms today and was very impressed. Thought I was going to see a gen-z screamer but was intrigued and fascinated throughout. Culturally seems to occupy an odd new space - something in the vibe of Clerks and Mallrats mashed up with Blair Witch but seen through the lens of the covid generation

You’re right. It’s lazy to block any code “written by AI” because that’s just how code gets written these days. You can code well or code poorly using an LLM. I think the problem is now ANYONE can produce huge quantities of plausible code, so I have a lot of sympathy for those who have to process it

When you see the story about how the world now has its first trillionaire, and when you see the story about how laboratories in Congo have run out of supplies to test for Ebola, it is important to understand that in many ways these are the same story.

Hungary is small but they were blocking the EU from pumping money into Ukrainian drone production (which had significant spare capacity). There is never only one thing that changes the course of events, but unblocking EU funding will I think turn out to be significant
