Yet they still offer me discounts and suggest I might be interested in the exact items I've purchased from them. Sometimes items that are currently in transit from their warehouse! Yes, thank you for the chance to pay $3.00 more for the product you shipped to me yesterday. 🧐

If this is all "AI" it's one of the silliest uses yet. - Enjoys British television - Collects and watches classic films - Likely has a home/desk computer setup - Appreciates nature documentaries This is just putting tags and categories on things, but draining the Great Lakes in the process.

Don't worry, eventually they'll have an Italian Week and get me back for my vicious slander. 😁

"...and then pop them into the oven TO DRY THEM OUT." This said about a cookie that was in danger of having a flavor, and thus was incredibly tiny. So they bake them twice to make sure they're properly like eating beach sand.

"We call them biscuits. The essential characteristics are: harder than the ship's rations of our jolly Jack Tars, drier than the desert where Monty fought Rommel, and eating them should require a stiff upper lip and a heart of oak."

Also biscuit week is always strange for me. The British have no clue how to make cookies.

THEY CHANGED THE INTRO MOPPET ON GBBO! That should be a crime. What's next, a punk rock version of the jaunty little tune? 🧐

I wouldn't mind if future generations can date certain words by the time of detrumpification, like it's a good indicator that a text already existed when Akhenaten died if "jtn" is hacked out. For us, bridge guides speak of XXXXX cards. Disney had XXXXXX Duck. XXX we now our gay apparel. And so on.

Trump is basically Akhenaten (deranged, thinks he's a god, wants his image and name everywhere, makes everyone listen to him speak, terminal daddy issues, stares at the Sun). After he was gone, the extirpation program was so complete they hacked out the three letters of "Aten" in unrelated words.

I was in a group like that ages ago. We traded off DMing, and eventually we each wanted to bring our favorite NPCs into the party. (My character was a pirate who also owned a bar, and one day the minotaur bartender was like TORQ WANT ADVENTURE TOO!) It was tricky to maintain. Best of luck! 😁

My immediate gut-reaction answer is Carl Sagan, but what if we spend an evening hanging out and it turns out we don't really want to be friends? Can I have all my pets back instead? 😅 Or maybe a history-phone. I could call Ramesses II and harangue him about the Battle of Kadesh!

This is a really difficult question, because if they're part of your everyday life, then you get to know them so much better... and what if you don't get along? I don't mean "what if they're secretly evil," just, "what if we don't find each other interesting? What if we don't like hanging out?"

Great thread, and it neatly encapsulates why I think Jurassic Park is the rare perfect movie. Acting, directing, effects, yes, but more importantly every frame is earned. Nothing happens without being set up and foreshadowed, no setup is left without appropriate payoff. This monologue is its heart:

I wonder whether the incoherent advertising influences the reviews. The ads I've seen refuse to give me a hint as to what it's about. So I'm left with "Go see this movie about Tom Cruise wearing facial prosthetics mugging and gesticulating in two-second flashes!" And... no thanks? 🤷‍♂️

I'm increasingly a Luddite. This is a pernicious technology that cannot be used without harm. Even if magically made environmentally friendly, every piece of your own cognition you give over to "AI" is a piece lost to you. You stop using it, and it atrophies. It's the true death of expertise.
061
Kyle D. Long @blatherscribe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
With coding, all of its proponents have already built their own coding expertise, and they don't seem to be grappling with what it will mean for the next generation not to know how to code, only how to prompt. In the sciences, I see signs the same thing is happening.

Kyle D. Long @blatherscribe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The more I see how "AI" is developing, the less convinced I am that there are legitimate uses. On the creative front, it destroys creativity by design. You can't escape it: either it replaces human creatives, or it stops you from building your own creative expertise. Even if ethically trained.

Thank you for copying and pasting the original text. You can do that in alt text, too, and the BlueSky app even has a helpful setting that provides a reminder when you post images. 👍

One of the main ways we fucked up was in not listening to, and in fact further marginalizing and driving out of society, disabled people. Taking a text screenshot of a post (made by someone disabled by long COVID, no less) and presenting it with no alt text is part of that project.

The joke is doubly on them, because there is not a single non-Brazilian white racist who would consider Brazilian white racists to be white.

They put one in near where I live, in Iowa, and it's TINY. So there are people who try to drive more or less straight across. "Lane markings, what are those?"

Human, but not white. It doesn't exist as art or culture to them because it wasn't made by white people.

It's extra alarming that those are NOT the colors of the American flag. They're dimmer, greyer, darker. The eagle has no olive branch, just arrows. This is pure fascism: "We are a nation in decline, and it's all because of [insert marginalized group of the moment]."

They hate their mothers because their mothers told them no, and they hate their wives because they married women who would be surrogate mothers and tell them no. They need women to give their lives structure, and hate women for doing this, and believe them to be inferior. In other words, patriarchy.

1) Alternative medicine is an alternative TO medicine. 2) Why do these people always believe unquestioningly that the greediest corporations on Earth would not profit from this if it worked? "Don't try to make your own radium water at home, buy only pure, reliable Radnufi from PharmaKom!"

Even Wikipedia says restorative justice is meant to be complementary to the criminal justice system, not to replace it entirely. In my understanding it's about restoring the victim, not the perpetrator. How can that be done in the absence of meaningful consequences?

Also the thing with my dad wasn't *real* trickery. He's not dim, he knew what was in the fridge. We just didn't make an issue of it and he ate it because it was easier than making something else. I would *never* genuinely trick someone about food. I've had too many people do that with my allergens.

Same here. Although I do eat a lot of meat-replacement things because I lack energy for complex cooking, I'd be just as happy if they didn't try to replicate meat. Best nuggets I ever had were like micro-spanakopita, not fake chicken. Unfortunately, garlic, so they were delicious but made me ill. 🤷‍♂️

I would have loved a place like that. But please tell me the cheese was vegan, for no other reason than that was how my mom and I converted my dad to eating "fake" cheese: made him a grilled cheese sandwich and didn't tell him. He has not been bothered by his lactose intolerance since. 😁

The only nuance here is how to handle the internal conflict when you are absolutely opposed to the death penalty but keep reading about people who ought to be dropped out of a helicopter into an active volcano.

It's 61° F, high of 67. Humidity at 63%. No rain forecast all week. I'm gonna risk it. I'm gonna open a window! And I'm going to pray to Sakhmet not to afflict me with mildew for my hubris. Living with a river and damp soil as the predominant landforms can be such fun.

I would not eat at a restaurant that advertises food that looks like that. It's not just the "AI" slop (although that is also disqualifying). That food is at the "entomologists are now interested" stage. 🤢

I don't have expert knowledge, but maybe this can be used to help switch to sodium ion batteries, and we can make EVs (and phones and everything else) less destructively. And the burrowing owls won't get evicted.

I can't answer this question until I know what you're asking. Are you asking which city you're landing in? Or whether you're landing? If "landing" is the operative word, that opens up so many more interesting possible answers. It's a flyby, or a touch-and-go, or maybe you're not even flying! 🤔

It's not secondary. The destruction of culture and the dismantling and selling of our cultural infrastructure is part of the same project as the murders and human trafficking. The perpetrators and goals are the same. It only becomes wrong if one values a piano over human life, which this is not.

Some other animals have behaviors we would consider crimes, but do they have the necessary cognitive framework to view these behaviors the same way? I don't think anyone knows for certain, but I strongly suspect humans invented evil, and only humans are to blame when evil is done.
000
Kyle D. Long @blatherscribe.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Not responding directly because I have no wish to derail a 99.9% correct thread, but... I do wish we would stop blaming other animals for human behavior. No other animal species commits the crimes human evil ingenuity has devised. We have become worse with evolution, on pace with our betterment.

"You were mean to what I decided must include me personally so I had no choice but to become a monster." Trump won because the majority of cishet white men voted for him. That's it. We have to own that and understand that *we* are the ones with work to do and accommodations to make.
