Brett Baker @bjbaker.bsky.social · 17/01/2025and can alternate with /t/ (and doesn't alternate with /j/, usually) 130
Brett Baker @bjbaker.bsky.social · 17/01/2025In Australian languages, it gets worse: most of them have two 'rhotics', /ɻ/ and /r/, and they behave quite differently in terms of phonotactics and alternations. /ɻ/ behaves like the other semivowels, /j/ and /w/, and can alternate with /j/, /r/ behaves like the other liquids to some extent 150
Brett Baker @bjbaker.bsky.social · 17/01/2025I have a major problem with the term 'rhotic' though, for exactly the reasons you point out: that it encompasses sounds of many different manners and places of articulation including zero 160
Brett Baker @bjbaker.bsky.social · 17/01/2025I would regard them as sound changes if by sound changes you include all realisations/reflexes of the proto-language inventory. 140

Brett Baker @bjbaker.bsky.social · 29/12/2024I love #SamKonstas, and his performance on day one got me back into cricket after about 30 years of non-interest. But maybe now the media can go easy on the hero worship frenzy. We've seen enough of that over the years. #AusvInd 110
Brett Baker @bjbaker.bsky.social · 29/12/2024Why's that interesting? Because it makes VP look a little shaky as a phrasal category. But on the other hand, it also makes arguments that VP is *not* a phrasal category in Australian languages also less impressive, if the negative evidence is just from clitic placement. 100
Brett Baker @bjbaker.bsky.social · 29/12/2024OK the point here is that, at least in some P2 clitic languages, clitics can attach after an NP (e.g. Warlpiri). So far, I've been unable to find good examples of VP (Verb+Noun(Phrase)) acting as a host for clitics. Object clitics don't count, they're just another one of the clitic string. 110
Brett Baker @bjbaker.bsky.social · 27/12/2024But can you get Obj-Verb-clitic or Verb-Obj-clitic? That's what I'm wondering about. 110
Brett Baker @bjbaker.bsky.social · 27/12/2024Posting again now that there are more of us here: Does anyone know of a 2nd position/wackernagel’s position clitic language where VP can host clitics? And I’m only interested in VPs that have overt object! 210
