I was using a self-made stencil just now, and suddenly had a memory that made me stop. My mind was blown because I had not thought of this thing in many decades, but it was one of my favorite toys when I was a kid. youtu.be/_gpmGxagNaA?si=BpfLtEoBbdT…

Some texture exercises. Funny. While taking this picture, my phone interpreted some portion of it as a bar code. Looked like a phone number. Then it lost it and I could not get it to see that again.
5 horizontal strips of pen and ink textures.
vertical lines at different intervals
random patches of randomly angled parallel lines
a weave pattern of alternating horizontal and vertical lines
larger areas of randomly angled parallel wavy lines

The news outlets are going all out to make this storm look like the end times. It must suck to have to do that. It's barely raining and there's no wind to speak of here. They're filming from the coast, where, yes, there are waves crashing at high tide. It is the Atlantic Ocean and all. It may […]

I may have shared this in the past but... Years ago when I was actively doing pen and ink work, an acquaintance told me "it would be easy to do that with a computer" and copied the cross-hatching style I was doing, with the attitude of, "see, you don't have to waste all that time doing it by […]

This laser-cut nested cube given to me by Jared Tarbell in the mid-2000's surfaced yesterday. It's about 1 inch square, and came in a single sheet - separate and put together yourself. Jared was the first person I saw doing this kind of physical stuff with lasers.

Inspired by a zentangle pattern. Seems simple, but kind of tricky to code though.
black and white curved stripes with random circles overlaid. the circles are rendered with xor so the black parts of the background are white and vice versa.

Biscuit conditionals. huh. www.futilitycloset.com/2026/09/17/o…

Oh, Thank You
There are biscuits on the sideboard if you want them. That’s a natural-enough-sounding expression, but it’s also a peculiar thing to say. “[T]he verb is the highly ordinary are,” noted philosopher J.L. Austin in 1956, “but the if is more like that in ‘I can if I choose’ than that in ‘I panted if I ran’: for we can certainly infer from it that ‘There are biscuits on the sideboard whether you want them or not’ and that anyway ‘There are biscuits on the sideboard’, whereas it would be folly to infer that ‘If there are no biscuits on the...

Speed of light is surprisingly slow. I'm holding out for light v2. www.futilitycloset.com/2026/09/14/s…
futilitycloset.com
Speed Limit
We think of light speed as dizzyingly fast, but it’s still disastrously slow given the roomy universe we find ourselves in. NASA astronomer James O’Donoghue designed these videos to illustrate. If we could bend it around Earth, light would orbit the planet in 0.13 seconds: And it takes only 1.255 seconds to reach the moon: But it takes fully 3 minutes to reach our neighboring planet Mars at its closest approach: Light from the sun takes more than 8 minutes to reach Earth. To reach the closest star takes more than 4 years.

President at Anthropic

Anthropic is calling for a global effort to pace AI’s progress and give experts additional time to better manage the risks of increasingly capable models. To make this effort as effective as it can be in helping humanity build AI safely, we think three things should happen.

First, every AI company should commit to giving third-party evaluators employee-level access to verify safety, report problems, and guarantee compliance with the slowdown. We’re committing to doing this.

Second, AI companies operating in democracies should work together, with government support where necessary, to set common safety standards and limits on runaway AI progress.

Third, the U.S. and other democratic governments should try to coordinate with authoritarian governments pursuing advanced AI, recognizing that verification here is critical.

None of this is easy, but we believe we need to try, and if we manage to secure the benefit of time, we need to use it well. I hope you’ll read more here: https://lnkd.in/gxkPj9FC
