What makes early succession here distinctive is that plants and landforms shape each other. Pioneer vegetation stabilises loose substrate while geomorphic activity keeps resetting the surface. Tracing that #biogeomorphic feedback is exactly what we came to measure. 4/4

A new GLORIA study in #Science shows European summits are losing their most characteristic plants to warming, even as total species numbers rise. Forelands run the other way: new ground is created, not lost, and richness climbs as bare substrate is colonised. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... 3/4

Rising plant extinction rates on European mountain summits
Climate change increases plant species richness in alpine ecosystems. However, to what extent this diversity enrichment masks extinction dynamics of resident species remains elusive. In this study, we...

We were out there with @hzandler.bsky.social, Wolfgang Sulzer and geography students from @uni-graz.at, recording proglacial vegetation and paraglacial adjustment. We flew a DJI Mavic 3M and a Matrice 300 to map the foreland, with GeoSphere Austria and the @alpenverein.bsky.social. 2/4

The #Pasterze at the #Großglockner holds the longest continuous length-change record of any glacier in the Alps, one of the clearest records we have of glacier retreat. Every metre the ice pulls back leaves fresh terrain behind. That is where our work last week began. 🧵 1/4

This is the intense #RAVE I promised in my last post. We use rock glaciers as an alpine #biogeomorphological #open-air-laboratory, as they move at a rate we can precisely measure, which gives us a #disturbance gradient to test a question still open in the field... with @mhanusch.bsky.social 1/8

Time to up my social media game again. After starting a #postdoc last autumn at @uni-graz.at, there was little time to post any of it. So here's me trying to share a little of the academic rollercoaster and use this space again. Up next... a rather intense #RAVE in #Kaunertal!

A new research chapter begins: in the last two weeks, polar fieldwork at @uni-graz.at Sermilik station in Greenland 🇬🇱. We did a huge UAV survey to study vegetation, glaciers, GLOFS, icebergs, DOMs & start our new biogeomorphology project led by @biogeomorph.bsky.social A dream (wait for the whale):
