20 March 2026. The tide is out at Muriwai Beach, and I’ve taken my international homestay student to catch a sunset. It was on his wish list to do while he was here for a term. The weather was perfect with blue skies. Our visit was well-timed as the lower tide allowed us to explore areas not accessible at other times. Taken around 6.30pm, we’re at the south end of the beach. A white sandstone cliff basks in the setting sun. Native unkempt growth straggles over the cliff’s edge like an outgrown hair style. There’s a large cavern opening, dark and forbidding. In the foreground and within a tidal pool surrounded by black sand, a craggy, uneven rock outcropping gives pause. It looks like a scene from a fable -- that of a fallen god, face down and partially submerged in the water with his outstretched left arm and hand reaching out to try and soften a tumble. And there he remains to this day, just outside the safety of his chamber within the cliff. Was it the darkness that caused his fall, or was it the light?

Winter 2018. Usn's are hanging out in The Cosy - just J, me, and Iti, our beloved rescue cat. She's flat out asleep on a tan throw blanket and feeling safe as. My heart melts at the proof: her front legs are splotted out akimbo; her face tilted down in the blankie. One of her hind feet is stretched out from under her, a white paw with brown-freckled pink toe beans on display. Being a tortie-calico, her darker fur is mottled with hints of caramel. 1 May 2013. Photo from my old iPhone 4. We two adventurers have been in NZ for just over 14 months at this point. Our near-constant commentary to each other: “Shut up, you didn’t tell me it would be this beautiful here” or (even more cheekily): “Damnit, why’d ya hafta drag me across the planet to this horrible place?” followed by big grins and hugs. The wide view is of Okokino (Eastern Beach). The curving sweep of white sand softly cups the still waters of the strait between Auckland’s Eastern suburbs and the islands of Rangitoto (the volcano in the far distance) and Te Motu-a-Ihenga (Motiuhe Island). The sun’s rays glitter and lightly dance across sections of the water’s surface. In the foreground of a well-manicured reserve, a well-constructed stone and wood bench serves as a rest spot for locals, even wanna-be runners such as me and hubby. Our first rental was only about a km or two away from this locale – easy to see why this route became a favoured one! Just before the bench, a slope descends to houses lining the beach. Covered with native grasses including large clumps of harakeke (native flax), the green blanket of growth sparkles in the sun.

Today’s prompts are quite serendipitous as I joyfully remembered last night’s dream: one of showing some visitors around this area, the local school that was a highly sought-after one, the small beachside restaurant where many a date night was had <3

No one knows what the future may hold. I’m reminded that even with some of my (now slightly) jaded outlook at times, it’s still good to have wide eyes and take in the view. You just may see something that may carry you thru the low times.
