More often than not, clean builds can solve some issues that occur due to something, something being cached or not properly overwritten, but also they assure that your project compilation will work for other team members (given that the rest of their setup is correct).

One more tip about setting up automated builds is to have "iterative" and "clean" build configurations, with "iterative" being the one that pulls the latest changes on top of the existing local state, and the clean one being the one that wipes everything before each build.

We are doing our best to continue at this pace, and have an alpha version testable in a few months. Until then, you can help us stay motivated by wishlisting Berghotel Heist on Steam and spreading the love! 🎮👹👺🎮 #gamedev #indiegamedev #steam #ue5

Of course, it is always possible to test *some* stuff locally, but more often than not, we would receive false positives, before testing them in a real environment and experiencing existential crisis :D :D

Additional benefit is that we work remotely, and just being able to test multiplayer features so effortlessly is a blessing for us. Sadly, setting up multiplayer sessions can still be a huge pita, and multiple builds are necessary to dial everything in.

Bindus @bindus.bsky.social · 16/03/2025
On average (given that it is a pretty barebones game still), iterative build takes 4 minutes from clicking "Submit" in our VCS to having it updated on Steam.

Bindus @bindus.bsky.social · 16/03/2025
Coming back to the topic of dev-ops and CI/CD, our latest effort in making co-op sessions work through Steam, and using UE OnlineSubsystem has been made infinitely more convenient, just by being able to build and deploy a build with a couple of clicks.

There are multiple free (or free until a certain threshold) and paid solutions, and since our project is made in Unreal Engine, my recommendation would be to look at the Perforce and TeamCity (both are free until a certain number of users/projects, which is perfect for tiny teams like ours).

At first, the whole setup process might seem daunting, but here are countless high quality guides online, as a similar practice is also common in other branched of software development.

Bindus @bindus.bsky.social · 12/03/2025
For the ones that are not aware of such systems, the biggest benefit is that you can automate compilations/building, testing, staging and publishing process, and once everything is set correctly, those steps can be triggered with each version control submission, or just a single button press.

One of the parts of game development often skipped/overlooked by the indie developers is a creation of a reliable CI/CD pipeline, which, in my experience, can save you a lot of headache as your project grows, and particularly if you have commercial aspirations.

Be careful when using Level Sequence with Binding Tags. The “Add Binding” call should be done before the “Play” call. Otherwise the level sequence will unnecessarily spawn a new actor during "Play" and then destroy it when the binding happens. #ue5 #gamedev

Some improvements for the arcade vehicle system made in UE5, including better suspension, tire dynamics. I am making an open-wheeled vehicle since, albeit more difficult initially due to collision handling complexity, it will allow me to make various types of off-road vehicles in the future.

Looks great, as always. I find it nice to actually see the amount of work that goes into creating something. Besides documenting personal achievement it is a great resource for someone (hopefully) following in your steps.

Another small teaser.. Still wobbly and shaky, but it will get there.. eventually :D My goal is to make a minimal, yet versatile arcade vehicle implementation in UE5 using Chaos physics, for scratch. I am also writing an article documenting the whole process as well as some tips and tricks.

One of the highlights of UE5 is the whole "Modeling Mode", especially in the context of whipping a quick prototype together to get a better sense of scale, without leaving the editor..

The best advice I have heard about learning, is to write about the topics you believe you know well. It is great for discovering holes in your knowledge, and to patch them up as you go. It works wonders for curbing the god complex too :D (not as much for the imposter syndrome though .. )
Image humorously illustrates the emotional rollercoaster of a programmer's day. It features a cartoon character riding a track that rises and falls like a sine wave, representing fluctuating emotions and confidence levels throughout the day, between a god complex and an imposter syndrome

I can't recommend using a repository to backup your code enough, even if it is a personal project. Many times did I rescue accidentally deleted files, diff-ed code to find changes I forgot I made and easily moved my project between PCs. Also, it is good experience for future programming jobs.

10th anniversary Journey thread, recreated: I was the art director of thatgamecompany's Journey. It set the course of my career and my art. I'm forever thankful to the community of players and their incredible love for the game. This is a thread comparing early dev images and how things shipped.
The intro title shot from the PS3 game Journey. This is from the finished game. The title "Journey" is displayed above a distant mountain, with the player character seeing it from atop a sand dune. The intro title shot from a work in progress version of Journey. The title's font is different, the composition is asymmetrical, and the distant mountain is not as tall as the final version. My initial sketch for the title shot for the game Journey. A simple, small line drawing featuring the player character in the foreground and the mountain in the distance.
