at some point in my CS:Source map collecting days I extracted a map into my game folder which reskinned the default flatscreen television model with this frame from Batman V Superman on it. I'm not 100% sure how to revert it so he's been popping up everywhere for years at this point. hello batman.

it's not exactly *good* but it's weirdly high-effort in a lot of unexpected ways. I fucked up in a driving section and the characters in the car stopped their (very long) conversation to complain, then resumed where they left off. also it has this incredible tutorial popup
"Shooting and killing are classed as Psycho acts"

started playing Reservoir Dogs for the PS2 and I still am struggling to believe it is a real game that exists. why are there vehicle sections. why is there a morality meter. why is there so much extra dialogue. why are there weirdly unique hostage-taking and ordering-people-at-gunpoint mechanics.
Third-person shooter screenshot. A man in a suit crouches behind a riot shield in the middle of a main street. Barricades and police cars are visible in the background. A prompt at the top of the screen says "Press Triangle to perform a Bullet Festival".Third-person driving screenshot. The player is in a blue muscle car racing a second green muscle car across a bridge.A post-chapter rating screen. There is meter that reads "Psychopath", "Career Criminal" and "Professional" in order, from left to right. The meter is currently leaning towards Psychopath.

not so sure about the bombed-out Half-Life 2 apartment blocks though
Counter-Strike Source screenshot. In the skybox of the level, far out of the playable space, the designer has dropped several large Soviet-era apartment blocks in various states of devastation.

revisited de_troit (somewhat popular map from a server I used to frequent as a teen) and remembered how I used to think it was really weird that the designer built a massive industrial estate directly adjoining a load of suburban family homes. no, turns out urban planners will totally just do that.
Counter-Strike Source screenshot. A short cul-de-sac in an impoverished neighborhood. In the foreground are several forlorn suburban houses of the sort that were clone-stamped all across the post-war US. They are sharing the street with a couple of massive industrial buildings and a lot full of shipping containers. There's a smokestack towering over the whole thing.A shot of the street from the opposite direction. Many more houses are visible in the background. A large billboard advertises the level designer's website.

I have made cinnamon tea cake. it's not very pretty but it tastes fantastic. sorry you'll have to take my word for it.

it's also just kinda nice to walk through. cool grungy ruined space city. I love archways and domes and big-ass pipes of dubious function.
The outer wall of a large stone city in a desert environment. A couple of windmills stand outside, and a crumbling pipe spans a gorge in the rocky terrain.A gloomy courtyard between several stone buildings. Graffiti of some unknown creature is visible on a wall, and dead ivy clings to some arch supports. Another big pipe crosses from one building to another. The edge of the city, overlooking a sea of yellow haze. Domed structures cling to the outer wall, and even larger towers are silhouetted in the distance.A large cylindrical domed room with a crumbling roof, allowing the reddish glow of the sun in. A mysterious metal orb sits in the centre, surrounded by a couple of radiating pipes.

learned that the original design for Flinders Street Station had a gorgeous arched concourse roof with huge windows and I'm a little heartbroken that they cut that part mid-construction
The winning design for Flinders Street Station, showing elevations along the two major adjoining streets. The building is in a neo-Baroque style and was constructed around the start of the 20th century.A zoomed-in view of the design, showing large arched windows along the Swanston Street side. A Google Maps view of the current building, which is (at least from the Swanston Street side) rather flat and unassuming.

I got a couple of complaints about The Warmest Body In The Room being too dark when I released it and all I can say is sorry, my last apartment didn't get any natural light and I didn't balance for screen-glare-havers. and also I was feeling mean.
A large abstract concrete structure, hostile and dimly lit. Spotlights mark floors and important edges.More of the structure.

Maddie is showing me Jak X and it's absolutely incredible to me that a series that started as a goofy lighthearted kids' mascot platformer has ended up with a soundtrack like this They played QOTSA's "Millionaire" over the intro cutscene???
Wikipedia extract:

The soundtrack for the game was composed primarily by Billy Howerdel of A Perfect Circle, with assistance from members of various other bands, including The Crystal Method, Limp Bizkit, Tool, The Offspring, Faith No More, Nine Inch Nails and Queens of the Stone Age (the game's intro sequence features songs from the latter, taken from their album Songs for the Deaf).[5] The cutscene music was solely composed by Larry Hopkins.

there's a section in Skin Deep where you zoom in on some nebulas through a telescope and I'm a little annoyed that the placeholders shipped because they are 100% just blobs that I drew in thirty seconds with a brush in gimp

the "post a game you remember playing that nobody else remembers" thing is so easy if you just had one mediocre shareware demo disc as a kid
Monkey Shines. It's a pretty standard shareware platformer where you're some kind of ape avoiding spooky stuff and going from screen to screen.Noop's Odyssey. Slightly obtuse platformer featuring a distressing mucous-coloured blob creature. Baffling texture and sound design choices.Dangerous Driving. Fixed-perspective racing game where you drive around a track and uhhhh that's basically it. I think this one had a level editor, maybe.Alien Cabal. It's a 2.5D FPS from the era when everyone was churning these things out. Vaguely Men-In-Black-themed. I could never get past the first level.

watched The Third Man for research. I think all movies should dedicate this much screen time to sewer infrastructure.

A man in black stands in the middle distance.A dutch angle of a vaulted space, with a gantry running over a tunnel entrance. A ladder to daylight is visible. Policemen point flashlights down the tunnel towards the viewer, while a running man enters the room from a higher doorway.A long brick tunnel with light streaming in from the far end. A solitary figure stands silhouetted against the entrance.A vaulted brick chamber with water flowing through the lower half. A man dashes across gantries suspended from the ceiling.

seriously this is the most entertaining dungeon crawler I've played in a long time
A garbage-laden corridor with lanterns and boarded-up doors. A spindly pale demon lumbers towards the player.A combat screen with a load of status effects being applied to the layer. Two tiny purple fairies hover in an industrial room.A rough stone corridor that branches in two. A tall figure in a dark robe stands nonchalantly at the fork.Another combat screen. I'm on fire. The enemy is on fire. Everything is on fire and it's totally according to plan.

Played the Corpus Edax demo and this game is so fucking funny. It's like Invisible War if Invisible War let you hit a dude with a lead pipe so hard that he ragdolled and went flying across a room
A grungy sci-fi courtyard with a tree in a metallic planter and a giant fan set into the wall, casting shadows on the surrounding walls. Two members of the 'Skulls' gang are infighting on a subway platform. The player, who is not in immediate danger, is sitting down and resting.A dystopian city skyline, viewed from a junkyard. The sky is grey and thick with fog.A decrepit hotel lobby with a vast central staircase, lit by flaming trash cans.

Poking around in a demo disc I had as a kid and experiencing Domination (1997, Xtreme Games). It's mostly unremarkable but I do love the in-game terminal system (and the profoundly maximalist hud)
A first-person shooter in classic 2.5D. The player character is wielding double chainguns and the HUD is cluttered with various readouts (many of which are, in fact, giving useful information)An intro cinematic where a bunch of pseudomilitary orders are printed out on a green-and-black console screen. Small images of our grungy cyberpunk protagonist guy are displayed at the top.A terminal system with a prompt and various commands.A shareware screen prompting you to buy the full version. It promises "bitchin wetware", "guts flying everywhere" and "girls, girls, girls". Thanks, guys.
