Update: did not even take me five minutes, itch has a native client LOL (also installed Lookouts instead cause RtF didn't show up in my search results for some reason)

I haven't tried installing any titles from itch.io on my PC so far but I'll test if I can get Remember the Flowers running in a bit when I'm done with work and get back to you on that. The biggest issue with the compatibility tools I had was pressure sensitivity of non-wacom tablets in art software

Also thank you for the input. Haven't heard of the battery issues so that's something for me to look into. If they're easy to replace and recycle it might still be worth it.

My opinion on Apple from a technical standpoint is favorable honestly, the biggest issues I have are how inconsistent each version of MacOS behaves and how I sometimes waste half an hour figuring out where certain settings even are. From a consumer perspective, not a fan of the prices and ecosystem

Most games work! Like, 95% or so I'd say. The few where Steam doesn't work out of the box just need a different version of the compatibility tool (Proton) which are easily installed with ProtonPlus. The few that you will not be able to run are Roblox, anything from Riot/Bungie and like, Fortnite

We're spoiled for choice enough on the gaming market that honestly losing out on the handful of affected titles is not that big of a deal to me. Not to devalue the opinion of people who want to play Roblox or anything from Riot/Bungie, but this is like an issue the developers created not Linux.

Generally my best advice is "if it lets you use BTRFS as file system, just use it". A bit complicated to explain what a file system is but BTRFS allows snapshots (think of them as quick saves of the OS), you may have to set it up first but it's so handy when you break something by accident.

Oh, and in terms of distributions, Mint is the easiest one to get running. Very user friendly installer, comes with a lot of drivers and tools out of the box. If you want something that's more optimized for gaming like a console system, Bazzite is good but it is a bit more difficult to get into.

For a USB stick to be bootable, the ISOs need to be written on it in a specific way. Ventoy and Rufus are programs used for that. Ventoy allows you storing multiple ISOs and pick which to run when you start the PC so it's what I recommend if you wish to try different distributions with less hassle

When a computer starts up the motherboard looks for places that have suitable operating systems, by default the internal drive. To change the operating system ON that drive, you will have to start the computer from a different device, easiest being either a DVD or a USB stick.

The biggest hardware related issues I have encountered in the past involved secure boot options on a mobo or wifi cards. More modern hardware seems to work better for installs than older devices in my experience, ironically. Also note survivorship bias. Clearly some people do have HW problems.

The only tools you need are a USB stick and either Ventoy or Rufus to burn some ISOs on it. Depending on what is most important to you the distribution I would recommend varies though.

Recently at work one of our clients got a warning that a website hosting service they pay for is doing a database update that affects themes and such. During a check if it affects them we learned they've been paying for it for six years while essentially not using it. Roughly added up to over 600€.

Ich erinner mich explizit noch als ich den Sprung gemacht habe Probleme mit Expedition 33 zu haben wo meine Grafikkarte nicht mehr so wirklich als Nvidia Gerät erkannt wurde und ich nur noch TSR verfügbar war und kein DLSS oder XeSS mehr Beim Test jetzt grade hab ich das Problem jetzt auf beidem 🫠

Ich hatte einmal Probleme mit meinem Grafikkartentreiber und beim Wechsel von X11 auf Wayland (was die meisten Distros seit neuestem zum Standard gemacht haben). Bei manchen hat's dann geholfen Startparameter zu setzen ('PROTON_USE_WINE3D=1 %command%') aber kann schwer sagen ob das so gewollt ist.

Für die spezifischen Proton-Versionen nutze ich ProtonPlus (lädt die Versionen auch direkt ins Steam rein also relativ wenig Fummelei), aber deine Absturzmeldung kenne ich so leider nicht. Evtl. gab's ein Update von der Distro was die Berechtigungen auf die Pfade gesperrt hat oder so?

Wenn die Spiele starten aber schlecht laufen ist bei mir meistens eine falsche Version von Proton ausgewählt. Manche Spiele laufen besser mit Experimental, manche besser mit Stable, manche brauchen DWProton (insbesondere bei manchen Gacha Games) oder GE-Proton (meistens bei allen anderen)
