There may be an entire continent hiding beneath the Pacific Ocean. 🌏 In the landmark #GSAToday article “Zealandia: Earth’s Hidden Continent,” researchers propose that Zealandia should be considered a continent: geosociety.co/Mortimer_et_al #Zealandia #ContinentalCrust #PlateTectonics #Geoscience

I cleaned up the smaller specimen of rock that I collected in this hike over the summer in the Gallatin Range of Montana. Now it joins my teaching collection. ⚒️

198 of #365Minerals 🧪⚒️ Labradorite: - Feldspar group mineral - Forms in igneous & metamorphic rocks - The shiny effect (labradorescence) is caused by microscopic lamellae which act as diffraction grating & cause colourful flashes - Named after its type locality, Labrador Peninsula, Canada #minerals
An irregular shaped chunk of labradorite whith a bright blue shine and dull grey veins running through it. From Labrador, Canada.

Specimen on display in the Natural History Museum, London.A cut and polished, elongate octagonal piece of labradorite. It's black around the edges and its centre is shiny and blue-green to blue in colour. From Russia.

Specimen on display in the Natural History Museum, London.A cube shaped piece of labradorite which is mostly grey but has a bright blue flash of colour on its top face. From Majunga, Madagascar.

Not a low-T-stuff fan. Obvious that I have to go for a time-capsule friend #Monazite, even though odds not in our favor. #MinCup26

There are a lot of gatekeepers out there and you are destroying the future of the field with your lack of creativity. Do something useful. Step aside and allow the field to advance.

Probably the best individual thin section ever produced. John Faithfull's slice of the olivine cumulate from Unit 5 of the Rùm layered intrusion. #ThinSectionThursday
Thin section microscope image showing a background of black, white, and very pale yellow plagioclase covered in a series of long worm-shaped olivine crystals, all showing bright second order birefringence colours like yellow, purple, and blue. They are all aligned down towards the right.

A nice schist with muscovite, kyanite/sillimanite, chlorite, and twinned plagioclase. #thinsectionthursday #geology #science #minerals #rocks
An image of a rock in thin section, displaying crystals of various minerals (kyanite, sillimanite, muscovite, chlorite, plagioclase). A schistose texture is observed, with the muscovite being aligned and appearing to 'flow' from top right to bottom left of the image.
