#Durability ≠ #Fatigability ≠ #Repeatability ≠ #Resilience. Our JAP Viewpoint (accepted!) dives into why these distinct concepts matter in endurance research. Grateful for the collab with Michael J Joyner + @billysperlich.bsky.social. Let’s discuss at #ECSS2025 or during the Tour de France!

Zone2 training may not deliver the same benefits for everyone. Our new study found substantial interindividual variability in physiological responses, even among trained cyclists, indicating that personalized intensity prescriptions are necessary. @billysperlich.bsky.social doi.org/10.1155/tsm2...

Our recent study included the effects of creatine supplementation on vlamax-testing. The results imply that some athletes may be limited by their metabolism while others could be limited by the testing setup. Read more about it here: cdn.nutrition.org/article/S247... @billysperlich.bsky.social

Supplementation of Creatine Monohydrate improves sprint performance but has no effect on glycolytic contribution: A Non-Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Crossover Trial in Trained Cyclists
Summary: Creatine loading supplementation increases 15s-work while hinting at different mechanisms involved in its effects on individual limitations to 15s-work.

Earth breaches 1.5 °C climate limit for the first time: what does it mean?
The threshold has been exceeded for only one year so far, but humanity is nearing the end of what many thought was a ‘safe zone’ as climate change worsens.

I still advocate open-access publishing. But we urgently need better regulation. Right now, the major beneficiaries are large publishers. In Germany alone, we are spending millions of taxpayer euros merely to “flip a Word file into a PDF” - and that’s not sustainable.

Billy Sperlich @billysperlich.bsky.social · 20/12/2024
🏔️ Information Overload: As the study below illustrates, the sheer volume of publications has grown so large that even specialists or expert practitioners struggle to keep up. My original goal - making knowledge more accessible -has, in some ways, backfired.

🚀 Skyrocketing Costs: What once cost <€1,000 to convert a Word file into a PDF with a DOI now easily surpasses €4,000. The process itself hasn’t changed - it’s still just flipping a Word file into a PDF- yet the publishing industry has turned it into an expensive mega-market.

👉 10–15 years ago, I was a strong proponent of open access publishing. My reasoning was straightforward: practioners outside of academia should not have essential knowledge locked behind paywalls. However, my perspective has shifted due to two main factors:

5/n Future research should adopt a more holistic approach to avoid oversimplification of the dose-response relationship between TID and performance. Contextual factors like technique, environment, and biomechanics need to be considered.
000
Billy Sperlich @billysperlich.bsky.social · 27/10/2023
4/n Our study does not pinpoint an optimal TID for individual sports. Factors like exercise mode, strength training, environmental conditions, and biomechanical loading are not accounted for, making cross-sport or seasonal comparisons unreliable.
100
Billy Sperlich @billysperlich.bsky.social · 27/10/2023
3/n Time spent in various intensity zones (Z1, Z2, Z3) by elite athletes differs significantly between sports & within seasons. No one-size-fits-all TID exists. Yet, a commonality is the large amount of time spent in Z1 across all endurance sports.
100
Billy Sperlich @billysperlich.bsky.social · 27/10/2023
2/ n Retrospective TID studies often use varying methods of quantification. Notably, 49% of TIDs are based on single-case observations, primarily in cross-country skiing/biathlon, limiting generalizability across endurance sports.
100
Billy Sperlich @billysperlich.bsky.social · 27/10/2023
1/n In the current study, time spent in intensity zones Z1 (<96%), Z2 (0%–70%) and Z3 (0%–41%) varied widely between sports and seasonal phases, with only 15% of the study participants being women and just 5% of the total subjects represented by female-only TID analyses.
