The PSM Standard has not stopped all chemical accidents, but it’s a big improvement on the ad hoc systems in place before. At this point, AI may not be fully controllable, but developers appear to still be using ad hoc controls instead of a multilayer, systematic approach with regular reviews.

I’m sure you a correct, thorough 300 char limit hurt my clarity. The PSM Standard requires 14 specific management elements to be in place for users of hazardous chemicals. I think a similar approach makes sense for AI, rather than the government trying to develop proscriptive controls.

Like AI, chlorine gas and acrylic acid can escape containment and kill people. Regulate AI like Process Safety Management (29CFR1910.119). Require management to build AI controls that work, maintain them, and audit the results. If they can build AI, they can control it. They just don’t want to.

No understanding of the properties of wood, just word statistics.

Bill Flarsheim @billflarsheim.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Trivial example, but basic. I Googled pilot hole size for a #6 screw. AI summary said 3/32" for softwood and 5/64" for hardwood. Sites differ with a range of 1/16" to 3/32" for softwood and 5/64" to 7/64" for hardwood, but the softwood hole is always smaller. That's fundamental, but AI reversed it.

I signed permits for people to work in tanks and equipment that had previously held acid, required suits because there was still acid, or were still cooling from 1500 degF. Sometimes, I went in too. Good procedures minimized risk, but still a lot more risk than making bets on November pork bellies.

There’s a super fancy, old hotel there, but there are lots of other guest houses and bed and breakfast places that are affordable to middle class folks. My wife and I spent two nights on Mackinaw on our honeymoon. We splurged for a dinner at the Grand Hotel, but stayed at an ordinary B&B.

Abdul El-Sayed on capitalism: “I’m capitalist who just knows about capitalism. I have a bad habit of reading, I’m so sorry.”
We’ve spoken about capitalism versus socialism.

Do you want to talk about capitalism? Let’s talk about capitalism. Are you recording? Capitalism is about leveraging the laws of supply and demand to efficiently allocate capital expenditure to maximize value. When capitalism works, it’s because you have free entry and exit into markets. So if you believe in capitalism, you have to believe in government regulation to protect markets. In fact, right now, we have exactly the opposite. You don’t have to be a socialist to believe that you should be taxing billionaires their wealth. In fact, if you are a capitalist, you should believe in that. So, I’m capitalist who just knows about capitalism. I have a bad habit of reading, I’m so sorry.
