K-Pg boundary between the Cretaceous rocks(white) and the Claron formation(pink). UT14 near UT148. Dinosaurs in the lower white rocks gone in the upper pink. Maybe, see alt #Photography #Geology #KPg #CedarBreak #Zion #CEBR

Several of us geology nerds went for a ride east of Cedar Breaks National Monument to look at a megabreccia landslide. On the way up UT14 we stopped at a scenic overlook with a view over all of canyon. This was a geology trip; I took a picture of the readout. Checking the geological map later I realized this maybe the boundary; or it may just be bedding in the Claron.

Hillside of burnt conifer and quaking aspen. Some of the conifers are unburned and most of the quakie bark is still white.

Hand sample of a granodiorite(?) from north of Carp Nv. #Photography #Geology #Rocks #Granite Used duckduckgo ai for an ai interpretation. Snippets of it’s thoughts are in alt Personally, I am not very good a hand sample id’s.

4x, GPT-5 analysis "Most likely identity: fine iron oxide (hematite/limonite/goethite) coatings or disseminations — probably oxidation products after an Fe‑bearing mineral (e.g., biotite or amphibole) rather than primary garnet. Reasoning:

Size and irregular habit favour oxide coatings/aggregates over crystalline garnet (which is typically larger and euhedral when present).
The slightly metallic to earthy luster and tendency to cluster along grain boundaries or as coatings is characteristic of iron oxides/oxyhydroxides.
Presence of nearby flaky or pale brown mica-like material (possible altered biotite) supports alteration → iron oxide."

Scale markings are mm. ai Description and likely ID:
"Visible: coarse, interlocking grains of light-colored minerals (white to pale pink), abundant small brown to reddish-brown specks, and a few clear to greenish blocky crystals ~3–6 mm. Texture is granular, crystalline, non-layered.
Most likely: a granitoid — probably a granite or granodiorite with accessory iron‑oxide or biotite giving the brown speckling. The blocky clear/greenish crystals are likely feldspar (one may be perthitic or slightly altered) and the finer, lighter matrix appears quartz + feldspar."
