Today, I’m at Prague Postgres Developer Day, and @apatheticmagpie.bsky.social is on the stage with Anatomy of Table Level Locks in PostgreSQL
The image shows a presentation slide projected onto a screen. The slide features a SQL-inspired heading “Select * from me;” with lists of the speaker’s current and past roles. Current roles include “Staff Engineer at Xata,” “Postgres Contributor,” and various co-founder and coordinator roles related to PostgreSQL meetups, diversity initiatives, and conferences. Past roles include “Board Member at Postgres Europe” and “Staff Engineer at EDB, 2ndQuadrant.” Below the slide, a speaker, identified as Gulcin Yildirim Jelinek, stands behind a lectern with a laptop, delivering a talk titled “Anatomy of Table Level Locks in PostgreSQL.”

During my Master’s and PhD I was so into cyber security so I specifically focused on that area on my thesis. Additionally, I taught the Application Security 101 course at Informatica Feminale, Bremen University. Today, I found an unread message from one of the attendees on LinkedIn. It made my day.
The image shows a message expressing gratitude to someone who taught a class at Informatica Feminale. The sender mentions that the class was instrumental in preparing them for a job in IT security and that they started their first job as an IT security consultant two weeks ago. They thank the instructor for the encouraging class they attended last year.

The conference is over, and here is a sneak peek before the recording is released.
A speaker is presenting at a conference in a dark auditorium with a slide projected on a large screen. The slide is titled “Chat Bots – The John Doe of Gen AI Applications” and features a diagram outlining the process of chatbots, including steps like storing AI data, making it retrievable, submitting a chat message, and receiving a chat response. The speaker, wearing a microphone and badge, is gesturing as they explain. Conference branding and hashtags like “#202411” are visible on the podium and projection. A small audience sits in the foreground.

Today was a Tim Burton day for me. I visited his exhibition and watched two of his movies. In the past, I wasn’t fully appreciating how valuable it is to spend my time engaging with things that inspire my creativity—things beyond my usual work or research projects. Now I feel totally different.
A display of puppets and models from Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie, featuring Sparky, the iconic dog character with stitched details and large, expressive eyes, standing on a platform. Beside Sparky is the skeletal frame of a human character used in stop-motion animation, and a mechanical bird figure with intricate details. In the background, a fabric screen displays a simple landscape with a water tower and clouds, adding to the whimsical and gothic atmosphere of the scene. A framed drawing titled “Beetlejuice, 1988,” depicting a cemetery scene with a large tombstone labeled “Beetle Juice.” The stone is adorned with ghostly figures, crosses, and vines. The artwork has a hand-drawn, sketchy quality with pen, ink, and colored pencil, creating a slightly eerie but whimsical atmosphere.A framed artwork inspired by The Nightmare Before Christmas, featuring Jack Skellington, the “Pumpkin King,” lying in a swirling, galaxy-like pattern filled with white dots resembling stars. Jack is in a relaxed, floating position at the center of the spiral, evoking a sense of dreaminess and solitude. The artwork combines shades of black, white, and blue to create a cosmic and eerie effect, characteristic of the film’s gothic aesthetic.

I was unhappy that I couldn’t read the book "Designing Data-Intensive Applications" regularly. A friend of mine mentioned that he listened to it as an audiobook, so I decided to try that too. Suddenly, I found that I had a motivation to follow the book while listening. This is my new morning routine
A wooden table with the book *Designing Data-Intensive Applications* by Martin Kleppmann, an open audiobook app playing the same title on a smartphone, and two red mushroom-shaped salt and pepper shakers with white spots. A laptop with colorful stickers is partially visible in the upper right corner.

And yesterday I ran a half marathon. I have to admit that running the half marathon was unlike running a 10K; it’s crazy.

Is it only me or are you also having FOMO(especially considering the weird lay-offs in tech industry) when you’re back to work from a long holiday? 🫠

“This was England, a part of Earth where thinking about the weather was the chief human activity.” says Matt Haig in The Humans. Truth be told and I was crying about bad weather for the last couple of months. So today was my day, because I jump on my bike to ride to the Richmond Park. To the deers🦌☀️

Today I went to the Science Museum for the first time and felt emotional and joyful at the same time. I thought that I don’t appreciate the development of humankind enough 🥲 At the end of my tour I also admit that I’m nothing but a total nerd.🌌
