To tackle the volume of drug markets we're seeing, we would need to hire an additional 14 narcotics officers during the night shift. Simply shifting hours wouldn't work either, as that would disrupt active investigations in process. We'll be diving in in the months ahead to advocate accordingly.

As the drug market shifts to night-time, I asked at a public hearing last week what is the gap in enforcement. One insight: we only have 14 narcotics officers citywide. And none are operating fulltime at night.

Why is it so hard to enforce against double parking in San Francisco? I looked into it, and turns out, we have some outdated state laws hampering enforcement.

The Tenderloin is home to 3500 kids. Many of them the children of immigrants and refugees. Their perseverance, resilience, and hope is the inspiration that drives me. Beautiful, difficult, and important read in today's SF Standard about families living in the TL. sfstandard.com/2026/10/11/g...

The good, the bad, and the unexpected of raising a family in the Tenderloin
Five families open up about the trade-offs, coping strategies, and community they’ve found in one of the city’s most troubled neighborhoods.

Last week a tragic murder took place on Market Street outside the Warfield Theater. SFPD and the District Attorney today announced a suspect has been caught and taken into custody. Thank you to both offices for their swift action and accountability.

So thank you to CAIR for your advocacy. As Islamophobic claims from DeSantis and other elected officials threaten our communities, its important for leaders to stand by our civil rights organizations. And today, we stand with CAIR.

In San Francisco, they were key advocates in SFPD withdrawing from the FBI Joint Terrorism Taskforce, and leading on San Francisco's 2024 ceasefire resolution.

For decades, CAIR has been at the frontlines of legal support and immigration defense for the Muslim communities, supporting families experiencing hate crimes, or following attacks on mosques. They have mobilized people to vote, pushed for statewide advocacy.

Today in recognition of 32 years of civil rights advocacy, and in response to the Islamophobic hate mongering of Governor Ron DeSantis, I awarded the Council of American Islamic Relations SF Bay Area a commendation at the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

Addressing housing affordability in San Francisco requires us to build more housing, improve rental transparency, and protect renters. Yesterday the Board of Supervisors took action on all three.

Building by building, we're rebuilding the Tenderloin. A corner store that was operating as gambling den will now be turning into a community center for families, children, and more. Congrats to the TLCBD on taking over 200 Leavenworth. And sparking the revitalization of a neighborhood.

If buildings could have rap sheets, this San Francisco property had a long one. Now it’s set to become a community center at an important intersection in the Tenderloin.

Map: These publicly owned properties could become S.F. housing
San Francisco is still lagging far behind state housing mandates to permit 82,000 units by 2031, even as dozens of city-owned properties sit vacant or underused.

Public safety is strongest when people trust that the government will use its power responsibly. And the directives from Mayor Lurie and SFPD Chief Lew and legislation from Assemblymember Haney and DA Jenkins will help ensure that.

With our SHADE Act, such appeals will no longer be possible. Blocking hundreds of units of housing on a vacant parking lot in SOMA will no longer be possible. Delaying 100% affordable housing in the Mission, will no longer be possible.

Over the last decade, over 2000 homes have been blocked or delayed from being built due to NIMBYs exploiting our environmental laws, appealing these housing developments on the basis they cast a "shadow".

But we won't truly shut the market down at night until we're honest about what's left. Over the next few weeks I'm breaking down the data: where the market operates, what's working, what isn't, and why it's still so hard to get people into treatment. Part 1 soon.

Did you know if you tried to open a Trader Joe's, Grocery Outlet, or soon even a Mollie Stone's in San Francisco - you can't? That's because SF has outdated rules that limit new chain stores - even grocery stores and pharmacies - from opening. So today I announced legislation to fix it.
