tl;dr basically the Ivy playlist circa 2020

Photo of a NZ Herald interview with Tayi Tibble in 2020:
Ivy is fully insane now. They host drag shows most weekends, the bar is frequented by famous drag queens and occasionally has a roped off VIP section. It's home to two of the best drag shows in New Zealand, if not the world; Harlieween and Slay The New Year. It's the one place I can show up, random and solo and know most of my mates will be there. There's this unspoken "no-awful-DJs" policy, and the in-house Spotify is always up-to-date with the new releases from the faves: Kim Petras, Slayyyter, BlackPink, Rico Nasty, Doja Cat.

i was surprised by the number of Laneway artists i recognised, but they’re all from the period where spotify discover was recommending me _all_ of the queer femme music. ironically i completely missed out of chappell roan bc i’d cancelled spotify by that point

Hot dam! It's Beaver Week at the San Diego Zoo 🦫 The beaver ambassadors usually live behind the scenes, but Beaver Week means more chances to see and learn about them during special presentations all week long.

for those outside New Zealand: 2 years ago a veiled far-right astroturf org threatened to sue an investigative journalist for a book he was writing about them. He was not writing a book about them, but this incident meant former staff started leaking to him. He used those leaks to write a book.

The first in a sizzling new romantasy series by best-selling author Nicky Hager. A slow burn, spicy dark romantasy which follows the forbidden enemies-to-lovers romance between a girl and a dragon-shapeshifter Prince of the Fae. Perfect for fans of Fourth Wing and A Court of Thorns and Roses.

000

Sana @bigshika.com · 07/09/2026

saw all three Back to the Future movies yesterday and today as part of my "watch 100 new movies over 100 days" project bc I saw this date was coming up. ironically, bc i saw Part 2 and 3 both today, i'm now one movie ahead of schedule

Still from Back to the Future Part III. Doc is looking at a photo. Subtitles say "September 7th? That's this Monday!"

other movies i watched this week as i tried to catch up to my “one new movie per day” goal (i’m still one behind)

List of movies watched from 29 August to 2 September:
Godzilla Minus One, The Quiet Earth, Strangers in a Train, Gerald’s Game, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Rurangi, It Was Just an Accident, Conclave, Nightcrawler

this week, i got kinda annoyed with how deeply LA Nightcrawler was and went all-in on extremely Britishness. also i apparently felt like watching movies with really long titles #LetterboxdFriday #LastFourWatched

honourable mention to last night’s gyoza, which was _extremely_ ginger-forward bc my mom has basically lost her ability to taste ginger. i spent my first two nights there wondering why every single tea tasted of ginger, turns out she didn’t rinse out the pot enough after the ginger tea

A plate of handmade, as yet uncooked gyoza.

tonight's movie was Conclave bc my mom said that Spider-Man: Homecoming the other night gave her eyestrain from all the flying around. so I picked a movie with as much sitting still as possible and no chance of ppl flying around, but i overcompensated and she said it was boring as hell

anyway i just asked her if she wanted to finish watching Audition with me and she said under no circumstances would she ever watch that disgusting movie again. i guess i'll never find out what happens 😔

once, a long time ago, my mom took me to the movies bc she saw a japanese movie was on, except that movie turned out to be Audition. luckily we left before all of the torture started. Now she looks at movie synopses ahead of time.

120

Sana @bigshika.com · 31/08/2026

on the plus side, i learnt today that if someone (for example, my mom) uses their japanmart membership card and accidentally leaves one of their purchases behind at the till, the people at the store will actually call to tell you that you forgot the dashinomoto

120

Sana @bigshika.com · 31/08/2026

she wasn't exactly wrong though. $7 for a carton of soy milk on sale is way too much, even if it *is* organic. but like, inside voice please 😭

lmao. thankfully we haven't had this happen at japan day. Although it's happened at least once in Japan, which i guess is worse
