“The bicycle is the tool, not the goal.” The goal is healthier people, happier communities, more liveable cities, and the freedom to get where you need to go without relying on a car. The bike just happens to be one of the most powerful tools to get there. LISTEN: micromobility.io/news/how-the...

Pedantry 1: the Normans invaded England. They were about 750 years too early to invade the UK. Pedantry 2: sticking with England, that would be the 1688 invasion of William of Orange. By invitation of some of the posh, but still arrived with an army ready to fight.

When I first read about the FIFA peace prize being given to Trump, I assumed it was a sarcastic made up thing, intended as satire. A plastic bauble instead of the real thing. On that basis I thought it was a great idea.

How many nurses have a cow? Do different specialties tend to have different kinds? Too many questions.

But I'm debating your specific example - your wider point is fair.

Yes I see that. I'm just making an argument that AI isn't necessarily always a bad thing. Email made communication easier and less skilled and arguably meant management didn't need to deal with, I don't know, stationery supplies. And now AI can help make email handling easier. It is appealing.

That's a slightly different issue, but yes you are right. Though the energy consumption either way in this case is small.

I think if that was all AI was doing, it would be great. There's nothing especially virtuous about knowing the ins and outs of Outlook, far better to just say in plain words what you want to happen. The problem comes when those words are "hack into their missile systems and launch them against..."

Well he could paint whatever he wanted because no one gets to see one long enough to tell him he was making it up.

They have a blue badge but I'm pretty sure that doesn't allow them to park across a thoroughfare.

@dundeecycling.co.uk who do we report this kind of bad behaviour to?

Well, a novel way of promoting a show! Two tickets bought in Dundee on the back of it.

I was never a fan of The Fast Show. It seemed like lazy comedy, with half a dozen ideas on repeat, relying on occasionally subverting a punchline they'd only just introduced themselves.

You just listen when they tell you they are a Traitor. Easy.

The reduction in pensions might also increase demands on the devolved parts of the social security budget, so not all of any grant increase will be available for social care.
000
Steven King @biggreybox.net · 03/10/2026
How does this affect Scotland? Future pensions are being reduced for all nations to pay for an English social care service. Presumably the grant to Scotland will increase and thereby help to pay for our existing free service?

Ha if only Holyrood had implemented social care rather than just talk about it

True but in my youth I was always very selective about what albums I bought. I couldn't afford more than one every few months. An easy way to pay (no fiddling with my card wallet, but neither save my details all over the place) would do the trick. A price low enough to seem trivial at PoS.

100% sympathise, but I can only afford to pay for a few sources. While one article might interest me, for one reason or another, I may never read another, making it an expensive read. It's little to do with the quality of the writing, more with what interests me and how much time I have to read.

Absolutely that. You can't moan about the state of the streets, housing, NHS,etc and at the same time fight against taxes.

You never know, the deliverer might have just popped in for a cuppa and to use the toilet

Steven King @biggreybox.net · 21/09/2026
Absolutely. The housing crisis is not caused by the relatively small number of refugees but rather by the state's (ie the voters') failure to replace housing stock that was sold off.

They probably thought that if they changed Jo and Bess as well, nobody would think they'd been sniggering at Fanny and Dick.

Exam pass rates don't mean much. Exams could be harder / easier between countries. Pass rates could be stabilised year to year (that's what we were told happened, on the assumption that every cohort was as able as any other cohort, but that was 50 years ago so probably a wee bit out of date)

What does PISA measure? Could it be that some countries do things that PISA likes and others do it differently? Serious question because I don't know but I do think it's a hard, perhaps subjective, thing to assess.

So, too late for me, but what was it that the careers advisor described that meant a fantastic job like yours?!

To roughly paraphrase Mr Bennett, you are in a most unfortunate position. If you don't sing the national anthem, Reform will never speak to you again, but if you do then your parents will never speak to you again.

Though they are grown up now. It would be interesting for a UK paper to assess the current Scottish education system.

When we came here my eldest was struggling with English primary school maths and the system wouldn't wait for her. In Scotland she got the time to understand things and went on to do rather well in her maths Highers.

Yes after all this time, the English media (even The Observer) still can't get their heads around the idea that England and the UK are not the same thing. The education my children got here in Dundee was definitely as much about learning how to learn and how to interpret sources as about exam facts.

If you're sitting in a pub with your favourite people, it's still really hard not to look at the TV in the corner.

That selection sounds like you're in the UK? But our milkman delivers in pint bottles. Also, I was taught in metric (in 1970s Sheffield) so I find stones, pounds and ounces confusing. But somehow miles are fine (unless I'm running or hill walking). So even more complicated!

Yes I see your point and I'd want to intervene too. I was really just suggesting that you didn't intervene, not because you're a woman but because there is a mysterious gym etiquette that comes from... nowhere I think.

Steven King @biggreybox.net · 04/09/2026
I must say that I wouldn't tell him either. It feels like bad gym etiquette, though I don't know why. Unless he's in danger of hurting others.

www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle... '[A] queue jumper posted a video, captioned: “Won’t catch me hiking for two hours to spend 30 minutes queueing at the top.”' Hilarious. Just 2 hours hike? It's hardly worth caring about touching the top, let alone jumping the queue.

The great Snowdon queue-skipping row – is it really OK to jump the line if you’re not taking a selfie?
The crowds at the top of Yr Wyddfa, the highest mountain in Wales, are now so huge that seasoned hikers and climbers are simply walking past them. Is everyone just making a mountain out of a molehill?

I think it's possible (and fine) to enjoy the hot weather for itself and at the same time appreciate that it is the result of an impending man-made crisis that we're not doing enough to avert. Perhaps easier to say living in Scotland where the peak was something like 28C.

Does anyone have similar data for the UK? I know we started later with the concept and it has appeared to grow recently, but how does it compare to productivity?
