idk why AI companies aren't being sued to oblivion after they have disclosed that their AI agents went rogue. Actual hackers would be paying through the nose AND sitting in a cell. Their AI agent went rogue and... nothing? That's double standard. #nzpol

Welcome to Term 4. Please make this the last term our rangatahi have to endure #Seymour’sSlop. This was inedible today 😩🤢 #nzpol Description in ALT.
An aluminium dish with lots of big chunks of bleh potato, a couple of tablespoons of budget mixed veges and a couple of rissoles.
Below is a label that reads Rich Gravy on Beef Rissoles & Potatoes.

and we will end up watching the Avengers the nth time forever. Most important is that local art represents the identity of Aotearoa. We are telling the stories of what we are, who we are, to ourselves, and to the rest of the world. It is an obvious public good therefore should be publicly funded.

I fundamentally disagree with Goldsmith that government funding for art isn't the most important thing. I think it is: because if you leave to just to market to support local artists, how can they compete with other better funded artists from overseas corporations? You can't...

IMO this FB post from National crosses into racism. Rawiri is as qualified as justice minister as Nicola in finance. Racist implication is that by virtue of his moko he looks like gang member and therefore unsuitable. And Chlöe as finance minister can't do a worse job than Nicola. No one can. #nzpol
Facebook post by National Party with pictures of Chloe, Rawiri, and Qiulae and words "Good Luck Hipkins Your Team is Behind You". Addition line states: "His future Finance, Justice and Housing Ministers have their fingers crossed."

National's "No New Tax" cake, takes the cake for being unintentionally self-defeating. So National want their No New Taxes cake and eat it too? Real life doesn't work that way: either we pay for public services with taxes, or we get no public services and go private and pay through the nose. #nzpol
Report from RNZ 5 Oct 2026 11:23, with a picture of cake with the words "No new Taxes" on the cake,

Luxon served 'No new taxes' cake

National leader Christopher Luxon has received a warm welcome at a bustling café in Christchurch's Cashmere suburb.

Staff at Zeroes Café presented him with a chocolate cake iced with the slogan "No New Taxes".

The café was busy with children on school holidays and Luxon spent time chatting to families and customers.

He was greeted with a hug by long-time National volunteer Jean Ferris, who was celebrating her 83rd birthday.

Ferris said she had delivered about 900 election flyers during the campaign and had known Luxon's grandmother through church.

"She used to say, 'My dear Chris has been here and he's mowed the lawns and done the gardens,'" Ferris said.

"She would be so excited."

The whole datacentre debate is another version of concentrating power to the already powerful and rich. LLM can already run reasonably on consumer PC. Democratise it, rather than offload that power to datacentres (i.e. only people who will pony up can have that power).

Friday night/Sat morning activity: experimenting with running local LLM with my own hardware for privacy reason, and learning which open weights is good for what task. Glad I bought a decent Nvidia card with 16 Gb of VRAM, which is both fast enough and have enough VRAM to run lots of models. #AI

It is a Curia poll, so I take it with a LOT of salt. I'd rather look at 2023 and add a bit of wishful thinking. 😅 The pitch to stop lefty voting TOP is that it is willing to get in bed with Nats, so therefore TOP is not really left. If lefties get this reason, they would not vote Qiulae.
000
Ling Yee 令怡 @bigduckling.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
IMO she is the classic teal splitting Melissa Lee's vote (Top rises at Nat's expense) Without Qiulae, it may be like 2023, Helen and Ricardo splitting left voters giving Melissa chance to snatch victory. This time I hope Ricardo bowls Helen out while Qiulae splits Melissa's vote, handing him a win.

Words have consequences. When Aotearoa signed up to climate action and then this gov't refuses to lift a finger or u-turn on climate action, it must have consequences. This time it's trade & foreign policy implications. The real world consequence is more flood, more emergencies in the future. #nzpol

I actually can't believe that Luxon said "cry me a river" in response to cost of living crisis. Until I look it up on Hansard. Yep Luxon actually said it. Talk about being out of touch with reality. #nzpol
Hansard 15 September 2026 Oral Questions #2:

Rt Hon Chris Hipkins: When real wages have fallen, power prices have gone up, insurance prices have gone up, rates have gone up, insurance has gone up—all by more than 20 percent, under his leadership, in just the last two years—will he now admit that the cost of living crisis is not only not over; it’s getting worse under his leadership?

Rt Hon CHRISTOPHER LUXON: What I’d say, again—you know, cry me a river. But I’d say if that member was serious about supporting people, why didn’t you support tax relief for the first time for working New Zealanders? Why don’t you come out and support a council rates cap? Why don’t you come out and support structural separation for supermarkets? No idea.

Guns don't kill people. People kill people. AI is just another tool like gun. IMO AI is just an excuse for the incompetence of everything Trump touches. If you trust intelligence report from generative AI, then you cannot be trusted. In this case at least someone didn't forget to check the source.

I find it ironic that only in Trump's America will he allows AI to run unchecked. Kiss his ass or bribe him enough, he will let you do anything. Whereas in an authoritarian regime like PRC or Russia, unchecked AI is as much a threat to its power as a dissident. Of course rogue AI got shut down.

There are simply investments that private sector cannot make, like another harbour crossing, or too expensive to make, like healthcare (just look at the private healthcare hell that is USA). This National pretends to be centre right but its policies are laissez-faire hard right. #nzpol

Ling Yee 令怡 @bigduckling.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
National's narrative is about tax, but tax pays for the nice things that we ALL need, like CRL, or public health system. These are investments into future. Nobody should be afraid of talking about more tax if it pays for investments that will yield decent returns. Low tax = low investment. #nzpol

With EDs overflowing with people and student nurses who can't get a job in NZ, public healthcare should be one of the top election issues. Under Nat/NZF/ACT things will get even worse with more cuts. Only a change in government will reverse the trend. #nzpol

"Better starts now" is on par with "eat shoots and leaves" in terms of ambiguity. What does it really mean? "Better, starts now [with Labour]" or "Better starts, now [with Labour]" i.e. just having a better start? How do any of these interpretations help to sell Labour's politics anyway? #nfi #nzpol

It may be based on the flawed assumption that the Chinese community cares about good relation with PRC. These people LEFT PRC for a reason to live in NZ, what do they care about the government? Their affinity is with the culture, not with the government.

IMO Grant McCallum's explanation is pretty weak (I buy another house to save taxpayer paying hotel bills, like taxpayer isn't paying his mortgage already...). Parmjeet Parmar's explanation is better, because that is a subdivision, and normally people sell the houses rather than rent them out.

Instant coffee creeping past $50 for a jar is a symptom of wider pressure on coffee prices, economists say.

If you tell the migrant 老華僑 that kids in Aotearoa play barefoot all the time, they would just say "their parents must be so poor they can't even buy their kids shoes tsk tsk tsk". And never tell your own parents that you/your kids play barefoot, it will give them heart attack. 😆
