It was a particular low point when I had to explain to a marketing bod that no, she couldn't use the alt text field as a handy place to hide a creative commons attribution...

For me, too! (please don't ask me to do the maths) But I work at a university so the freshers week experience is front of mind right now as the hoards descend...

Well, happy Charles Darwin is “very poorly today & very stupid & hate[s] everybody & everything” to all who celebrate, because he wrote those words in a letter to his friend (and author of Principles of Geology) Charles Lyell 161 years ago today

But Opus 88 pens are great! I love mine. I would recommend getting a blunt syringe to fill it, rather than the dropper they give you with the pen. Much easier and less chance of making a mess. (Not zero chance. The risk is never zero when ink is involved!)

Don't put drawing inks in a fountain pen unless they are specifically labelled as safe for fountain pens! Some inks are only for use with dip pens and will mess your fountain pen up!

Everything is either incredibly slow and painful or really fast and easy. And you can never know in advance which parts will be which.

We were fully bracing ourselves for probate to take forever. But after we submitted the form and sent everything off we got the email saying probate was granted and certificates in the post a whole *40 minutes* after the email saying they'd received the application.

Selecting a jury this way is so weird to me. When I was on a jury in the UK we were asked if we knew anybody involved. If we did, we'd be removed and sent back to the pool. The defendants were also asked if they recognised any of us, and we'd have been replaced if they did. No other reasons.

And if they're using AI to do the OCR as well? That apparently has a tendency to "fix" what it identifies as "mistakes" in the original text, even when told not to, introducing even more potential sources of error.

It depends on the context, but this a good use case for image descriptions in combination with tactile diagrams and/or 3D models if at all possible. Best guidance I could find on the topic is in this pdf, starting on page 79.

For people in the UK, I highly recommend The Real Cheese Project. Every month you get a really interesting cheese, delicious shortbread, and a sample of something to pair with the cheese. This month was an amazing blue cheese, rosemary shortbread, and a little pot of marmalade.

I can't handle normal tights material - I find it a sensory nightmare. But I love Snag's wool tights and have several colours. Also bought one of their towels when they had them in purple and I love that thing!

Realised I posted some pics of this in progress, but never the finished item! So for #ShowMeYourKnits 🧶 here's the finished crochet rocket ship I made for a coworker's baby, it has a bit of yellow:
A grey amigurumi rocket ship, with a red nose cone, red support struts, and a blue porthole window. There is a star shaped blanket attached to the base, with stripes of yellow, orange, red, blue, and navy. The idea is that it looks like the engine flames fading into the sky.

So I would never say "he's a ponce", but would say something like "he's a right poncy git, isn't he?" with "poncy" meaning putting on airs/trying to be posh/thinks he's better than he is?

Stopping at 30, but so far I'm absolutely terrible at this except in two cases: 1) When the labour ladies colour code themselves with the red jackets 2) I've correctly identified every single reform one shown to me?

I got through the transvaginal ultrasound by disassociating entirely. I know I had one done, but everything that happened after I entered the room is locked up in a filing cabinet in my brain, with a sign saying "Beware of the leopards." A total blank.

I used to be annoyed that I'd had to buy a second copy of Good Omens when I had a chance to have it signed by Pterry - I already had a copy signed by Gaiman, it was just on the wrong side of the planet at that moment! Now I'm really glad that they're separate.
