Such a pleasure to present at #JBIiGNITE today with @biancapilla.bsky.social on inclusive #SciComm and responsible AI use. Two things: a message can be accurate and still exclude the people it was written for. And every AI output we judged acceptable still needed a human to edit it. Every one.
Presentation slide titled "From good habits to future ready practice", with the subheading "Proof-of-concept study". Objective of the study is to characterise the failure modes that occur when AI is used to communicate EBHC (evidence-based healthcare) information across different communication formats. Study inputs: 1 x GenAI model, 1 x systematic review, 3 x communication formats. On the right is the first page of the source systematic review, Hadis et al. in JBI Evidence Synthesis, on the effectiveness of conditional cash transfers for uptake and retention in HIV prevention of mother-to-child transmission services in low- and middle-income countries. A small video of the presenter, Heather McCulloch, is inset in the top right corner.

AI outputs can reproduce the very exclusions that inclusive science communication exists to prevent. Read more in our new review: www.frontiersin.org/journals/com... #SciComm #HealthEquity @biancapilla.bsky.social
Infographic titled "Proxy participation: the appearance of inclusive practice while the underlying knowledge hierarchy stays intact." The top panel, "What you do see," shows an interface offering information that is easy to understand, personalised and inclusive, with nine diverse people below it. The lower panel, "What you don't see," shows the pipeline that shapes the output before it reaches you: training data, ranking, optimisation, defaults and presentation. Each stage rests on the questions whose evidence, whose voices, whose language, whose standards and whose context, all built on a foundation labelled "Power and knowledge hierarchies." A footer credits Pilla B, Mohan A, Elanga Elanga A, Dean L, McCulloch H, "Power, voice, and accountability: how artificial intelligence reshapes inclusive science communication in evidence-based healthcare, a narrative literature review," doi: 10.3389/fcomm.2026.1879185, and notes that the image was generated using AI, directed and refined by the authors.

Infographic titled 'Accuracy is not enough'. A balance scale weighs accuracy (a data report) against inclusion (a diverse group of people). Surrounding risks: power blind spots, language gaps, missing context, unvalidated assumptions. A health message can be accurate and still exclude people.

SuperEvident is a comic strip created by Instituto Veredas to explain, in simple and engaging ways, what evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM) is and why it matters. Presented as a Brazilian superhero, SuperEvident is an Indigenous woman, symbolizing the importance of valuing diverse knowledge systems in the process of translating evidence into action. Through storytelling and relatable characters, the comic makes complex concepts accessible to different audiences. Aligned with the 2025 World Evidence-Based Healthcare Day theme, “Collaborative Knowledge Communication,” SuperEvident illustrates how clear, inclusive communication fosters trust, dialogue, and collaboration, ensuring evidence informs decisions that truly reflect societal needs.
