while these debates have value, they also divert attention from present issues. The AI industry's violation of intellectual property, pollution and environmental harm, non-consensual deepfakes and the spread of false information. We need to deal with current issues as well as future problems.

This is as true for SWers, artists and performers as for everyone else, and is as true in physical spaces as in digital spaces. Being an object of attention is not in opposition to autonomy. Dictating how people can or should express themselves is.

In the social media age we are all positioning ourselves as objects of attention and desire. This does not deny us autonomy but is an expression of it. We present ourselves as we desire to be seen, with our goals and desires in mind.
