The way Washington talks about foreign policy is weird, and one of the weirdest aspects is how they talk about the foreign policy opinions of the general electorate.

The only Brexit regular I've heard anything from since Burnham's speech is Lillico, and he was waving a white flag.

Dunt's head still reeling from the Burnham speech. Last time he got in this kind of froth he was all in on Jo Swinson calling an early election. Best give him space for a bit.

The President of Princeton had been US President throughout the war, including the brief period toward the end when the US deployed troops on the Old Continent. He arrived at Versailles a conquering god. He had left office in 1921, firmly in the grip of Death, the year before this was painted.

The doggerel quote underneath it, by the way, was apparently cooked up together by Sargent and the President of Harvard. the old lie, dulce et decorum est ... The American experience of WW1 was different to the European. Sargent knew this, and was canny enough to please his patrons.

Very different from this, dated 1919, for which he was paid by the British Government, and which reflects a different sentiment both about the Victory and about all the Death as well.

Not seen this before, what a painting. He was official war artist for the British during the war but this is from three years after and it's for an American audience (he did it for Harvard and it's still there). "HAPPY THOSE WHO WITH A GLOWING FAITH IN ONE EMBRACE CLASPED DEATH AND VICTORY"

Originally, "I am on my way to the bookies to bet on a greyhound". Became a euphemism, well explained above.

This is in the news pages however. The portion given over to coverage of the Economy, to be specific. There was decades of George Will, and there is this, and they are not the same. This looks metastatic and is starting to look terminal.

When the Gorton & Denton campaign started it wasn't clear, but they figured it out. One signal among many: Hannah Spencer got a Corbyn endorsement, which love him or hate him will have affected tactical calculations far beyond the Corbyn fanbase. In Holborn & St Pancras it's ... Emma Dent Coad.

BetterBert @betterbert.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Gorton & Denton was all about the tactical vote. "What are my neighbours thinking about which candidate is the Stop Farage one?" There's none of that in Holborn & St Pancras.
