i don't have an "official" map for Moonshadow but I do use Inkarnate to draft out where significant locations are so I'm not confusing readers (and myself) by saying a journey of several hundred miles only took an afternoon on foot

This year, I read a LOT of Octavia Butler's work. Inhaled it. Absolutely inhaled it. Her advice for writers in the short essay Furor Scribendi has always struck something with me. It might for you, too. These "rules" are adapted from her Furor Scribendi, which you should absolutely read.

Octavia Butler's Advice for Writing - Adapted from: Furor Scribendi

Number one: READ. Read about the art, the craft, and the business of writing. Read the kind of work you’d like to write. Read good literature and bad, fiction and fact. Read every day and learn from what you read.

Number two: WRITE. Write whether you feel like writing or not. Choose a time of day. Perhaps you can get up an hour earlier, stay up an hour later, give up an hour of recreation, or even give up your lunch hour.

Number three: LISTEN. you need other people to let you know whether you're communicating what you think you are. workshops and classes are rented readers -- rented audiences -- for your work.

What's your favorite non-humanoid creature from a book? I always love a good fairy or chimera, personally! In Moonshadow, my favorite is Vasa the fox. Vasa is the beloved familiar of Ysea, the greatest mage on the western continent (and my main character's mentor.) She loves to steal snacks.

before I get started on my first read of moonglow's draft, I'm rereading moonshadow for the umpteenth time to re-orient myself in this world. thank goodness too, because I found a little typo that managed to slip between many self-edits, and two rounds of pro edits. happens to the best of us!
