Finished rereading this again yesterday, and I'm more convinced than ever that in these pages @adambertocci.bsky.social perfectly captured what it's like to be a millennial. Decades from now, when (or if) they study early post-Y2K culture, they'll be reading this.

Some of you may not know that years ago, I wrote a raunchy thriller/comedy as a celebration of the Halloween season. One reader called it "a great short story, that for its full impact needs to be read during the last week of October." It's $0.99 on Kindle. a.co/d/0g4AKZ7Y

A lot of people are referencing how good she was in "North by Northwest", and rightfully so, but "The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming" is really underrated. RIP to a great actress.

Good solid definitions for poetry/operetta/musical theater aficionados such as ourselves. I can't help thinking of rock-n'-roller Warren Zevon's explanation that the rhyming rules were looser for his genre, saying to a co-writer that in rock, "we can rhyme 'mom' and 'thanks' if we want to."

Not everyone knows what rhyme is these days (in the true, or Broadway, sense), so here’s Sondheim’s definition:
The immediate distinguishing difference between lyrics and dialogue is the conscious use of rhyme. There are many varieties: true rhymes, near rhymes, visual rhymes, regional rhymes, assonance, consonance, run-on, identities—as many types as academic taxonomy will allow. The most effective kind for a story-telling theater song is the first, so in what follows, when I say "rhyme," I mean "true rhyme."

A true (or perfect) rhyme consists of two words or phrases whose final accented syllables sound alike except for the consonant sounds which precede them. The accent can be on the last syllable (home/roam, convey/ dismay), which is called a masculine rhyme, or on the penultimate syllable (never/forever), which is called a feminine rhyme, perhaps because the fall-off after the accent gives it a bit of added grace. The accent can even be on an earlier syllable (rational/national, simulator/ stimulator), but the sounds which follow must be the same while the accented consonants must be different.*

An identity matches not only the final syllables but also the consonants that introduce them (motion/promotion).
What distinguishes a rhyme from an identity is the accented syllable: "mustache" rhymes with "just ash" if the accents are on "must" and "just"; if the accents are on "-ache" and "ash," they're identities.

I'm reading the sci-fi story "Lost Legion" by S.M. Stirling, and there's a recurring joke about how the battle-hardened female protag is annoyed by the absurdly sultry feminine AI voice in the giant tank. I can't decide if it is a clever critique of the trope or another instance of it. Maybe both?
