Somewhere in the north of The #Netherlands nature is spectacularly defying policy (zero tolerance for a.o. red deer). ❤️
Male red deer on a rainy evening, seen from the side, sporting an impressive pair of antlers, standing in shaĺlow waters, sniffing the air with its head held high. There is a reed bed in the background.

Geheel mee eens.

Vandaag eens wat #geologie / Let's do some #geology today at #SedimentSaturday or #SandSaturday! Granaatzand / garnet #sand, Waddenkust / Wadden coast #Wieringen, the Netherlands. Field of vision approximately 7x4 mm. Details in alt-text, also in English.
Granaatzand, goed gesorteerd, matig grof (ca. 220 - 230 micrometer), natuurlijk concentraat, Rinkeweelsdijk, Waddenkust Noordburen - Wieringen, 16-09-2006.

'Garnet sand', well sorted, medium coarse (ca. 220 - 230 micrometer), natural concentrate, Rinkeweelsdijk, Waddensea coast at Noordburen on the former isle of Wieringen, the Netherlands, 16-09-2006. Deposited during a couple of almost windless days, on which at high tide low-energy, small amplitude waves washed out the sands near the foot of the dyke, leaving a layer of heavy minerals, at places more than a centimeter thick. Pink to orange sand grains: garnet, black: ilmenite and magnetite, yellow-green: epidote, colourless: quartz.

Console-type mushroom, at first sight similar to a Turkey tail, approximately semi-circle concentric structure, slightly hairy surface coloured in shades of green by algae, attached to a fallen birch branch. Underside distinctly different from a Turkey tail polypore: a structure of radiating gills with only a few splitting, forming a more maze-like structure. A few concentric lines of growth disturbance add to the appearance of a maze.
