My thanks again to our hosts @thebrokenspine.co.uk for this week hosting #PoemsAbout #Rot here's one from its inspired by an extraordinary Shropshire landscape love to see what other poets do with the theme
  Whixall Woman

 On finding her below
 The sphagnum moss
 He brought her up
 From the ancient deep
He carried her from her mortal bed.
To his cottage in the wood,
lit a fire to warm and dry her.
And asked her, if she could
Love a simple country lad,
Who longed to have a wife.
She said she already loved him,
But up here she couldn’t live his life.
So, he took her by the hand,
Her beauty still in tact,
No telltale sign of decay
But neither was there time
Now to dally and delay.
As he led her back down into the fen
Where he and his beloved
Could forego this world of men.

Sanctuary
 My mother’s orange oak table
Stained by the patina of
Tears and furnish polish –
The one that later went for
Prayerful firewood –
Sat heavy on its haunches,
Having legs decorated like stockings
Of an old duchess,
All garlands and balustraded seams.
In earlier times mum’s lame ducks
Would sit around it drinking tea,
Men who had left their minds in Normandy
And young girls with short skirts
And shorter memories
Forgetting that hearts will mend.
I was too young to have regrets
Armoured in childhood as I was. © Bernard Pearson

Insomnia
An appalling crack of light
Pours into my room,
Picking up in its cast
Specks, spiralling
Across this place
Where I can no
Longer find peace.
A little universe from hell.
It seems to draw me
Away from familiar
Weather, the arcadia of my life,
She, who rises and falls
Beside me in sleep.
I beached, marooned
By the baying rabble in
The courtroom of my head,
Cursing the crushed velvet, moth
Book marking a fold in the curtain,
For its good fortune, in being dead.

                                             Psoriasis
                           The parchment
On which a life is writ
                          Becomes a little less
                          Readable over time.
                          There are more crossings
                          Out the occasional
                          Archipelago of blue-black ink.

They say the disease I have
Is inherited, but so is life
                       The affected areas
                       Are hidden thankfully,
                       However, they still are sore
                       Still areas of conflict
                       Where tears are shed
                       And death occurs.
                       Not to be spoken about

                                Charity Shop

                             She scuttles through the door
                             Cradling a cardboard box,
                             Containing an Elvis video,
And bag full of odd socks

                             Furtively she places
                             Them just inside the shop
                             Then mouths apologetically,
That she has no time to stop

                             He was only fifty seven,
And as strong as an ox,
                             She was his chestnut vixen
                             He, her silver haired fox.

                             On the thirteenth green
                             His heart just gave up
                             When his threefoot putt
                             Had trickled past the cup

Now all she had left was
                            their Yorky called Scamp
                            And the bungalow in Hastings,
He used to call, Base Camp.

Reading in Bed
In bed we write
me in short hand,
you in long script.
Our words lie naked
each sentence stripped.
and with dawn the
sheets that have
been written upon
make no sense,
for you are gone.
and this is not Ulysses's
Life in a day
it is death in a morning,
as you take your
unopened book,
and walk away.

Hall of Mirrors

In the Court of
Louis The cauterized,
Beneath a naked light bulb
By the name of Fleur,
Rank and decorum.
Are all important.

The revered picture of
His mum sits turned to the wall.
So, all his footy trophies
 have to do the same.

Outside, where Louis had not
Been for several years.
(Getting everything delivered),
An urban fox
dives in a food bin
Like Von Rothbart
in Swan Lake.
