A few weeks ago we had a fantastic conversation with Eren Önsöz at WDR about – you guessed it – neon signs in Germany. Check it out here: www1.wdr.de/mediathek/au...

'Beef Jerky Time' is 100% Trading Places (and also something I occasionally say).

Nice score; underrated band. They did a great long-form double-album (four track, four sides) called Perception sometime around 1997. Not sure if it was ever released on vinyl (I have the CD).

Yes, you’re right: Sleep (and ‘Conference’-era Om) are better as a slowcore/nu-metal crossover. Also: when I saw Boris their drummer had a gong, which grants them admission to a Venn diagram that also involves Prog; and their guitarist had one of those guitars that are, like, double guitars.

Berlin Typography @berlintypography.bsky.social · 02/06/2026
Don’t know enough about Nu Metal to make a knowledgable contribution to this Venn Diagram … but my candidates for the middle spot would be Jesu, Boris, Sunn O))) and Sleep (and, at a stretch, Fushitsusha).

Yesterday we saw our first copy of ‘Neon Deutschland’ in an actual shop (it was Bücherbogen in Savignyplatz).

It wasn't really a venue … it was literally a basement on the north side of Inverness Street (maybe beneath a record shop?). I remember it vividly, but it wasn't one of the usual Camden venues. And Crescent may, in fact, have been the headliners.

Hugely underrated band. (Fun fact: I saw one of their extremely rare live shows in some horrible Camden basement around the time this record came out.)

That’s a shame … would have loved to hear what an album called ‘Neon Deutschland’ might sound like. (For some reason, I’m imagining a cross between Kraftwerk’s ‘Neonlicht’ and ‘Thief’-era Tangerine Dream.)

That type of antiques market is also a thing in ABQ. There is one in particular that has a few record areas … but in recent years the records have been overpriced and in extremely variable condition. The whole 'records are worth money now' phenomenon has attracted a lot of amateurs.

For a brief moment I misread ‘Britain’ in the subtitle as ‘Berlin’ and thought ‘Damn! They beat me to it.’ Would absolutely read this…

I have definitely been to that market hall in Shrewsbury (bought a Sun Ra record there). In France and Germany there is a pretty solid tradition of Flea Markets, and if you go to the right ones you can occasionally find some gems.

Absolutely: the two best shops I’ve been to recently were in Kassel and Würzburg.

Other Music (in the 90s) was a formative influence. And Paris (much like NYC) had some amazing shops in the 90s and early 2000s … but those days are long over. Crocodisc is one of the very few survivors from that era.

You should get on that. It’s from a self-titled solo guitar record that came out around ten years ago. Absolutely superb.
