I have serious concerns about how the Democrats and most media are normalizing these US midterms, prioritizing issues like affordability. The elephant in the room is the emergence of an authoritarian and corrupt RW President and oligarchy working to fundamentally destroy the American democracy.

Time to call it what it is: separatists are promising to work with Trump and betray the rest of us.
Separatists have been coy about how they’d work with Trump to dismantle Canada. Now they’re facing tough questions, and so they should.

For years the MAGA strategy has been to "flood the zone" with progressively more and more outrageous behavior. The effect is to normalize bad behavior and pave the way for complicity by the general public. This is how the new fascism works.

On the "Pacific Link" pipeline, the ball is now squarely in the oil and gas industry's court. If the project fails, they won't be able to blame Ottawa for their own refusal to fill it. I suspect that was the prime minister's plan all along. #cdnpoli www.nationalobserver.com/2026/10/02/o...

Canada’s pipeline politicking is about to collide with economic reality
The ball for the west coast oil pipeline — sorry, the "Pacific Link" — is now fully in the oil and gas industry's court. One big question remains: are they actually willing to fill it?

However the projects themselves will significantly improve protections against spills and threats to sea life. The fact that increased tanker traffic and ocean protection are considered together is completely appropriate.

Studies of killer whales in the Salish Sea show two distinct trajectories. Orcas which feed on Chinook salmon are endangered, while mammal-eating killer whales are thriving. The difference is food supply, not tanker traffic. The Oceans Protection Act will address threats to both salmon and whales.

Susan, I spent an hour with Google Gemini learning about the science and economics of Carbon Capture and Storage for the Oil Sands. It's a very complex business. The very short answer is that there is likely a role for CCS if Canada continues to sell heavy oil. The big unknown is future demand.

It's wrong to suggest that the sole purpose of this $1B+ spending announcement is to smooth the way for the announcement of the approval process for a new pipeline. The Act is essential for protecting our oceans, ocean traffic, the environment and sea life whether or not a new pipeline is built.

A good indication of whether carbon capture will work is if the companies are prepared to make the required major investment. Technology tends to advance, often faster than we expect. I haven't studied carbon capture, but I don't think PM Carney would be requiring it if it won't be cost effective.

What's most important is to transition to electric vehicles, heat pumps and electrified industrial processes which is not adversely affected by planning for a new pipeline. 2/2

John Berlinsky 🇨🇦 @berlinskyjohn.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
1st you're assuming that the new pipeline will be built, which will only happen if there is sufficient demand. 2nd the negative impacts are small if the oil was previously sold to the US but gets a higher price in Asia, and they are positive if it replaces more polluting fuels such as coal. 1/2
