So anyway I restored Daicon IV from scratch. This was a joint project with Chris Person (papapishu), who sourced the incredibly Rare Laserdisc release. The raw files can be found on the internet archive for those interested in processing it yourself. Enjoy! archive.org/details/DAIC...

I rebuilt my setup neatly, I used paper trays, there’s good airflow, and the chargers are hidden behind the PCs. The total power consumption is ~25 W at idle (including both switches) and up to 350 W under CPU stress.

Je me suis amusée à faire un anti-cheat basique en C++: - Checksum léger - Chiffrement léger (XOR) - 2 copies de health - Allocation et relocalisation mémoire dynamique C'est un peu brouillon, mais c'est amusant de tester ^^

The revolutionary Xerox Alto computer (1973) started GUI computing, Ethernet, the optical mouse, laser printing, and visual word processing. We came across a password-protected Alto disk so I cracked the password. @tubetime.bsky.social looks at the contents: bsky.app/profile/tube...

Intel launched the Pentium processor in 1993. Unfortunately, dividing sometimes gave a slightly wrong answer, the famous FDIV bug. Replacing the faulty chips cost Intel $475 million. I reverse-engineered the circuitry and can explain the bug. 1/9

A die photo of the Pentium processor with the main functional blocks labeled including the caches, instruction fetch and decode, integer execution, and floating point. The image consists of complex patterns of rectangular regions in reddish and brownish colors. The image zooms in on a small part of the floating point unit giving a detail of an adder and PLA circuit.

Intel's Pentium processor (1993) can compute sines, logarithms, and other special functions. To do this, it has a ROM with 304 floating-point constants. I reverse-engineered this ROM and extracted the constants. You can see pi in the ROM, binary 11.001001..., encoded in the transistor pattern. 1/n

A diagram showing how pi is encoded in the Pentium chip. The Pentium has a ROM to hold constants in the lower right. Zooming in on the ROM shows how it holds exponents in the left and the signficand in the right. Zooming in more shows the individual transistors in the ROM. Eight bits are indicated with arrows, the binary bits that start pi.
