If I'm being completely honest, I think Kirby Air Riders was Sakurai's well-earned sabbatical project. But with it selling "only" 1.87 million (also per wikipedia), it'll be back to the proverbial (and far more profitable) Smash mines for him.

You say let it lie, but per Wikipedia it's the #3 selling Switch game at 38.14 million units sold. Nintendo's appetite for risk all but disappeared with the passing of Iwata. They won't leave Smash levels of money on the table. Including the DLC, you're looking at probably $3 billion-ish in sales.
