With Nick Rodd, Tracy Slatyer, & Linda Xu: possible tension with LZ and higgsinos arxiv.org/abs/2609.04175 If the LZ event is from a thermal higgsino, you would also expect events in the high-energy sideband, but LZ reports none. The collaboration can definitively check this with their acceptance.

Confronting the Higgsino Interpretation of the LZ Event with the High-Energy Sideband
The LZ experiment has reported a single 248 keV nuclear recoil event in their $2.84$ ton-yr exposure on a xenon target. The absence of lower nuclear recoil events is naturally explained by inelastical...

An interesting result out today from LZ. Definitely not a standard wimp, but maybe an inelastic scattering or momentum dependent scattering? (1/n) www.sciencenews.org/article/dark...

Have scientists glimpsed the first dark matter particle?
Shadowy dark matter has eluded scientists for decades. The LZ experiment may have spotted one particle, called a WIMP, but more data is needed to check.

Excited by our new paper www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2cv... showing that the QCD axion mass is bounded to be above 0.5 neV in heterotic string theory, with values around 0.5 neV being the generic expectation. Let's now build the axion dark matter experiments to test this! arxiv.org/abs/2605.04142

Very thrilled to have received a New Horizons in Physics Prize: breakthroughprize.org/Laureates/1/.... I hope this helps, in whatever small way it can, bring a spotlight on to the search for dark matter and more broadly the need for experiments and the funding to innovate, build, and operate them.

Excited to put out arxiv.org/abs/2507.15934 with Linda Xu (SLAC) where we use Fermi data to conclusively rule out the thermal wino as DM, in addition to the quintuplet and 7-plet. The doublet (higgsino) is the remaining, untested minimal DM model and a strong motivation for future searches.

Higgsinos are one of the best-motivated WIMP dark matter candidates, but mostly invisible to direct detection. We showed today arxiv.org/abs/2506.08084 that the soon-to-be operational CTAO-North detectors in the Canary Islands might be able to detect higgsino annihilation in gamma-rays before 2030!

Such a pleasure to have lunch with Georg Raffelt today in Berkeley after the “Baha Balantekin and George Fuller Fest.” He is an inspiration and has been doing axion physics since well before it was cool 😎. Also very neat to hear stories about his time in Berkeley in the 80’s.
