This is the footnote to his first mention of the steady stream of evidence of Israeli forces being engaged in "widespread and systematic abuses of the human rights of Palestinian Arabs", in Simpson's January 1979 Current History article.

An old photo recovered from the phone of one of my favorite people, who passed away recently. Recovered by her partner, doing the 21st century work of mourning, which I guess includes every question or task related to her phone. I'm grateful that he sent me the photo.

In the '70s, Israel refused to recognise any Palestinian political organisation, calling them terrorists. Easily the most substantial Palestinian political group at that time and for many years, the central group in the PLO, was Fatah. This was an account of how they saw their aims in 1970.

Two days earlier, this appeared in The Daily Worker, reflecting the efforts to organise working class support for the Child Labor Amendment, which would have made possible federal regulation which up until that time had been repeatedly struck down by the courts.

Ben Rosenzweig @benrosenzweig.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The proposed Amendment was already a moderate, compromise version but would have created a new terrain for struggle over federal regulation, which is why the organised Left supported the Amendment but also wrote things like this, from the 29 January 1925 edition of The Daily Worker.

As has often been the case, the Catholic Church framed its opposition to the Child Labor Amendment in terms of perceived attacks on Catholic schools. 'The 20th Amendment', from the 15 January 1925 issue of the Bulletin of the Child Welfare League of America.

A century ago, the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) was the Congress of Mothers and Parent-Teacher Associations. In reporting on the PTA-to-be’s national convention, the 13 November 1924 edition of The Catholic Telegraph noted support for the Child Labor Amendment, amongst other things.

Here's R.C. Gleaner in the 5 September 1924 edition of The Catholic Columbian, probably America’s most overtly pro-white supremacist Catholic paper, on child labor laws, claiming that only “propaganda of Eastern cotton mill workers” made child labor a public issue anyway.

The attempt to constitutionally prohibit child labor began in the mid-'20s. Of the dozens of letters on the subject received by the newspapers, many were from people and groups actively involved in the campaign. No bots though, and no troll farms. People forget how much child labor was normalised.

Ben Rosenzweig @benrosenzweig.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Writing a 'strongly worded letter to the paper' is still a go-to form of satire whenever someone wants to make fun of political actions considered either insincere or just ineffective, weak at best, deliberately useless at worst. But back then people on a substantial scale actually did that.

Ben Rosenzweig @benrosenzweig.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The study was of 1935, and about two issues in particular, though they highlighted four subjects that were getting much discussion. Easily the most substantial was the New Deal. Attached is part of the description of the others.
