Social scientists in the '30s used to study the quantity and contents of letters to newspaper editors to try to measure how successful propaganda had been on particular questions, such as in the famous 1937 study, 'Letters to the Editor as a Means of Measuring the Effectiveness of Propaganda'.

Managing stratification and exclusions in a state organised around ethno-religious hierarchies, like Israel, can involve concerns that genetic testing for matrilineal Ashkenazi markers - to inform access to citizenship, rights and resources - might also expose inconvenient family secrets.

People have ideas in their heads about capitalism becoming more capitalist, more totally capitalist, whether they're talking about total subsumption or the commodification of everything or a variety of formulations - all gesturing toward what is experienced as an almost social obvious content.

Many years ago I was an acquaintance of and friendly with a couple of people, siblings, in the aftermath of their father having had an I'm Old and About To Die Confession. I don't think it was literally a deathbed confession but very close.

A hundred and thirty years ago, Irish economist, statistician and writer Michael G. Mulhall wrote an article reflecting on and partially exemplifying what would really become a template for much 21st century racist bullshit concern-trolling about relative birthrates and population decline and such.

Victorian government and opposition betray native forests
A defeated motion in Victoria’s parliament for more transparency around state forest operations illustrates the misconception that Labor is the major party most likely to protect the environment.

Might have been good if someone translated Sergio Bologna's 2010 book, Le multinazionali del mare. Letture sul sistema marittimo-portuale. Maybe to better understand the politics of maritime trade and travel and the particular forms of private capital and state management involved in such processes.

My dad was already old when I was born. I mean, the guy hung out in the same coffee shops as the Beats. He did bureaucratic accountancy work for the Manhattan Project. He got rickets and was generally insufficiently 'nourished' growing up in a Depression-era Jewish ghetto, which used to exist.

Not big on posting links to YouTube videos I like, but the campaign against Hasan Piker feels endless, not just the cynical deployment of bad faith, but assuming if people notice they're being manipulated, it won't even become a brief theme in the fictions that are 'news' youtu.be/gtR6c2I8meY?...

Politics during a rise of fascisms is sometimes a bit like walking in on someone jerking off to something they vaguely remember should be embarrassing, where they react with the fury of someone who wants to cum and knows they maybe should feel shame just to prove they're not a complete pervert.

I guess we all just accept now that normal people - starting in the US but expanding outward - for some reason have to use this new euphemism for extreme grinding poverty: an 'affordability crisis'. 'Look at those people starving in the streets, they're experiencing the affordability crisis...'
