"*The teacher swam the boy" is pretty grammatically unacceptable. But it's much more acceptable if she gets into the pool and moves his arms and legs, rather than just blowing her whistle and shouting. Why? - Sentence constructions have meanings in and of themselves: lingbuzz.net/lingbuzz/010... 1/n

On my way home after a wonderful time at BICLCE-11 in Klagenfurt. Really enjoyed giving a talk with @alessandrobasile.bsky.social and all the constructive feedback. Wonderful scenery during the welcome (boat!) reception. Even got to see France play Paraguay. And, oh my, the catering 👌👌

Books: Advanced English Grammar: Depraetere and Langford (2025)
With more than 50 years of teaching experience between them, Ilse Depraetere and Chad Langford present a grammar pitched precisely at advanced learners of English who need to understand how the English language really works without getting stalled in the complex specifics. This textbook pulls all of the relevant ideas from linguistic theory to support the language student to fully understand English grammar. After introducing form and function, the authors cover verbs, nouns, aspect and tense
