Very cool to catch up on Mya’s artistic journey over the past five years since I last took a look. Her work was amazing then and she has only grown in creativity and talent. See for yourself at vgen.co/myasymi! #drawingwhileblack

James Robinson is such an unselfish writer, as in the midst of his big JLA/JSA crossover he finds time to nod to Grant Morrison’s recent-ish Seven Soldiers saga. He also writes one of my favorite Dick Grayson Batman takes, a shockingly strong Donna Troy and here finds a fun place for Jade. #JSAtoZ

I’ve got no experience with the Predator franchise whatsoever, but these Marvel books featuring the character intrigued me, and Benjamin Percy understands Wolverine few others, so I figured I’d give this book a shot. Intense and well done first issue with some visceral art. #ModernMarvel

Flash: Rebirth hits a speed bump with issue No. 4 as Professor Zoom has all the predictability of the Sinestro reveal in the Green Lantern book but none of the depth and novelty that made it work. So much of this series feels like a halfhearted attempt to replicate that story. #DCBookshelf

Of all the things I dig about Tim Sale’s art on Spider-Man: Blue, the beautiful depictions of Gwen and MJ aside, I think what I appreciate most is how well he and Steve Buccellato utilize negative space to frame their scenes. #MarvelBookshelf

Dark Nights: Metal is an aggressively weird story, but it’s ambitious, and I applaud both the effort Scott Snyder puts in as well as how much fun he’s clearly having. The Forge one-shot features some of the strongest Jim Lee art in recent years. It feels like a big deal. #DCRebirthEraChallenge

Incredible Hulk No. 21 can best be described as eccentric, but it does the job for a murderers’ row art team all the way to the letterer. With Kyle Kotz pencils, Eric Powell inks, Steve Buccellato colors and the legendary John Workman on letters, the pictures on this book cook. #MarvelBookshelf

I give a lot of credit to Lilah Sturges on JSA: All-Stars for taking big swings. The mythology of the second arc incorporates old Infinity Inc. and Eclipso plot lines with ambitious ideas. It doesn’t always connect, but the story is never dull and Freddie Williams II pivots impressively. #JSAtoZ

The prospect of Dan Watters, German Peralta and Mike Spicer together on Loki piqued my interest and they delivered. The climactic issue of the series mashes horror and mythology, gives Bullseye and splendid turn, and is adorned in beautiful art. #ModernMarvel

If nothing else, Flash: Rebirth is a fascinating exercise of watching a skilled writer try to fit what seems to be a round peg into a square hole. I’ll also credit the book for pumping up other elements of the mythos, particularly the value of Iris West and fraternity of speedsters. #DCBookshelf

Even though there’s some great Tim Sale action art in the back half of the issue, Spider-Man: Blue No. 4 is mostly about the opera, which, by the way, he illustrates beautifully as well. #MarvelBookshelf

I bag a lot on Barry Allen, but I will say that Joshua Williamson and his Rebirth efforts came along at the perfect time, where he can let the much more appealing TV version inform a take that still fits the comics. #DCRebirthEraChallenge

Captain Marvel No. 13 is mostly more of the same: not the most timeless example of Peter David’s writing, but some strong character moments weaved in with clumsy gags. ChrisCross’ art is bombastic and fun, plus Saida Temofonte is working overtime on lettering. #MarvelBookshelf

Justice Society of America No. 41 gives us the joy of James Robinson writing Golden Age characters again as well as the treat of his encyclopedic DC knowledge at work. This is also Mark Bagley at the very height of his artistic powers and rich colors from Allen Passalaqua. #JSAtoZ

Sabir Pirzada throws everything against the wall in Cult of Carnage: Misery, a book where the cyborgs have symbiotes, and you’ve got to admire it. I just like the way they pull in the most obscure elements of the Spider-Verse, like Lily Hollister, to pad out Liz Allan’s story. #ModernMarvel

The thing that occurs to me in reading Flash: Rebirth is the admission of sorts by Geoff Johns that even he realizes this is an idea that makes no sense, having Barry as much as say everything was fine without him. #DCBookshelf

Spider-Man: Blue is about making a case for Gwen Stacy, but if issue No. 3 starts the Mary Jane Watson sales pitch, it’s not hard to see why MJ won out. Tim Sale brings a unique take to a variety of classic characters, but his creepy, monstrous Lizard is one of my favorites. #MarvelBookshelf

After two lighthearted, fun issues, Batman No. 38 pivots to a dark and clever mystery. Tom King’s twists can be almost obvious at times, but I have to say more often than not he earns them by going hard. #DCRebirthEraChallenge

While some of Peter David’s gags from Captain Marvel still hit over 20 years later, most don’t age well, which isn’t surprising, but is a shame, as you can tell he cares about these characters. I’ve never seen ChrisCross look better on art, just super playful and energetic. #MarvelBookshelf

Their crossover with the JSA during Brightest Day gives me a chance to revisit the brief but fun and fascinating era of James Robinson writing Justice League of America. It was a run that evoked the team’s classic feel in terms of storytelling but boasted fresh takes. #JSAtoZ

In Red Goblin, Alex Paknadel makes the concept of “everyone in Spider-Man’s world has super powers and/or a symbiote” better than any I have generally seen. I didn’t dig Chris Campana’s art at the start of the issue but it grew on me. Just the right amount of weird. #ModernMarvel

Green Lantern: Rebirth somehow sold me on the idea of Hal Jordan, despite him being my least favorite option, however I don’t recall Flash: Rebirth doing that trick for Barry Allen. He is a bland character and his sacrifice was the thing that made him interesting. #DCBookshelf

If I found Batman No. 36 a bit grating, issue No. 37 turns things around to a darn masterpiece. The premise is delightfully Silver Age, but Tom King drags it into modern times. Clay Mann and Jordie Bellaire step up, even beyond their typical high standards. #DCRebirthEraChallenge
