Arbor Low, Derbyshire. This photo was taken on a beautifully still day in May this year. Only skylarks and bees for company during the visit to this stunning place. 📷 needs a click. #StandingStoneSunday #ArborLow #PeakDistrict
A view from the bank of Arbor Low Henge, across the ditch to a grassy central circle of (probably) fallen standing stones. In the distance is a farm and a line of trees. The sky is a milky blue.

A revisit to Long Meg and her Daughters for #StandingStoneSunday So much going on at this site with the setting, the geology, the carvings and the earlier monuments - just a fascinating glimpse at the Neolithic. 📷 October 2025 #AncientBluesky #Archaeology #Neolithic #Cumbria
A squat, white standing stone in a field. The stone is speckled with green lichen and is made of rhyolite and is a glacial erratic.A tall block of red sandstone, known as 'Long Meg', in a field. Another view of the tall red sandstone block of Long Meg, from this angle the stone appears tapered and long-necked. Other stones can be seen across the grassy field towarslds some deciduous trees.

After the University of York's exciting new paper this week, it had to be a Devil's Arrow for #StandingStoneSunday. This is just half of the southernmost stone, the second tallest in the UK at nearly 7 metres. #Prehistory #Archaeology #Yorkshire #Devil'sArrows #ThornboroughArchaeologyGroup
The upper half, in detail of a large, pointy millstone grit standing stone, heavily lined and grooved. It is a mottled green, grey and black colour and surrounded by trees.

Yockenthwaite 'stone circle' - that is more likely to be a bronze age ring cairn, although this is debated, too. What do we think, Bluesky? Whatever it is, it is beautiful and situated right next to the upper River Wharfe. 📷 from yesterday, looking south east. #StandingStoneSunday

There is something inscrutable about this statue of Juno at Corbridge Roman Town, Northumberland. Perhaps her eyes are closed in meditation, or she just inhabits many different emotions at once - whatever the sculptor chose to depict, she has a strange, disquieting beauty. #RomanSiteSaturday
A statue of Juno, roman goddess, protector of the State amongst many other diverse and sometimes disputed epithets. Photo from the Corbridge Roman Town Museum, Northumberland, England. The statue was found in two pieces under the Stanegate Road, near Hadrian's wall during excavation work in 1911 and 1912. Attributed to the 3rd Century AD. In the background a statue depicting Hercules fighting the Hydra, looks on.

Continuing a detour into early medieval England at the Crypt at Hexham Abbey. It has been there for over 1300 years since Etheldreda, Queen of Northumbria, made a grant of lands to St Wilfrid, Bishop of York, c.674 AD. Unusually, it was quite warm down there yesterday. #EarlyMedieval #Northumbria

Finally got to see these bad boys today. The Brompton hogbacks are Viking‑age stone tombs from the 900s, carved with end-beasts, (glorious term). Beside them stands an early medieval 'Celtic' cross, its patterns showing Christian influence as Yorkshire shifted from Norse to Anglo‑Saxon rule.

A vast, grey mosaic of smooth rock blocks (clints) split by deep, dark cracks (grykes). It looks like a giant, cracked stone pavement or a surreal lunar landscape, carved by ice and rain atop a massive cliff, with a cloudy sky above.
