My heroic fantasy novelette “The Red Priests of Zaggua” (started in the 1990s, finished this year) just sold to DIRTY MAGICK magazine. Great way to kick off a Monday morning!

Watched STARVE ACRE tonight, which I found wonderfully atmospheric and traumatic. It also helped me understand an issue I’ve been having wrestling with the third act of a story I’m writing about a couple who’ve moved to a strange house on Saddleworth Moor, so hurrah for that.

I was recently interviewed on the Smol Bear Show by one of my editors. The interview also serves as promo for his small press. Check it out if you wanna see nearly three hours of two neurodivergents nattering at each other! youtu.be/K76XP89WYfc?...

Blasted extraneous comma, thanks fat fingers.

Yes, of course - it may only have been due to wide belief. I’ve certainly never been dinged over using the word “killed” - but possibly it may come down to context, like “I wanna unalive that guy.” Time for someone (not me) to write a paper on it…,

Fantastic! Bring back your fiction line - have you seen what some of those are going for on the resale market? @chaosium.bsky.social

010

Benjamin Adams (He/Him) @benjaminadams.bsky.social · 05/08/2025

Seconded. (I was coming here to point out that it came into wide use as a “cute” means of getting around social media algorithms, but you beat me to it.)

Sorry for the late reply. You unfortunately received my growly take on MS formats after I reached a snapping point - you of course are in no way responsible for the frankly bizarre formats requested by other publishers simply to ease formatting at their end. I’m from the 20th Century, I guess. Pax!

010

Benjamin Adams (He/Him) @benjaminadams.bsky.social · 25/07/2025

Which is nice of you to say, but at our end it’s obnoxious how many different submission formats have come into existence. We literally can’t keep track. Shinn is based on the accepted physical MS format that existed for decades and it’s *right there*.

Hm. Sure would be nice to hear back from some editors with either acceptances, rewrite requests, or rejections. Anything’s better than an empty inbox, and at least with a rejection I can retool the piece for another market. A check or two would also be good! #writerlife

The fact they brought a film crew down here blew our minds, because it’s in the absolute middle of nowhere and not easy to find or traverse. And of course the weather for filming was grey and horrid, so you don’t even get a sense of the true natural beauty.

In the Gallifreyan Death Zone! This is the exact spot where the Master accosts the Third Doctor and Sarah Jane in THE FIVE DOCTORS. It’s literally a good 30 minutes down a one-lane sheep farming road in Wales.

Something the Mamdani win demonstrates is the extent to which the reigning cadre of ancient, establishment, centrist Dems think it’s more important to be on good terms with their GOP colleagues than it is to represent their own voters, and how thoroughly sick of this literally everyone is.

Receiving an acknowledgment of submission is always appreciated. Too many small markets these days claim “lack of time,” really? Why’re you editing something in the first place then? And avoiding conflict by simply not bothering with rejection emails at all? Grow a skin like writers are supposed to.

Away from pro writing for over a decade, six months back in and four antho sales under my belt, and once again finding the same swirling miasma of personal politics in the field that helped drive me away from the HWA and then writing altogether. Ah well. All part of the gig. Onwards.

As a horror writer, I can conjecture that the right wing has been conditioned into their current level of batshit crazy by decades of Russian mind control signals on Fox News. I mean, that’s just fiction, right? And hey, it explains all the stories of relatives changing into MAGA pod people….
