“Forever chemicals” don’t stay put. At a Danish firefighting site, two years of monitoring linked wetter soil to greater PFAS mobilization toward groundwater. Research with BGU’s Prof. Ofer Dahan. Full team and study below.
Original graphical abstract from Kolade and colleagues. A monitoring sleeve measures water content and samples porewater at different depths in ground contaminated by firefighting foam. The inset identifies FTDR sensors and VSP samplers. Paired plots show changes in soil water content and PFAS concentrations. The study links wetter periods to greater PFAS mobilization and shows how the ground above the water table can remain a long-term contamination source.

BGU researchers developed a cellulose aerogel that captures oil and supports oil-degrading bacteria. In laboratory tests, including simulated seawater, it brought oil capture and biodegradation together. Real-spill performance remains to be established. The research team is credited in the reply.
Process diagram showing nitrogen and phosphorus incorporated into cellulose fibers, forming ultra-porous pulp, vacuum drying, and pyrolysis into nutrient-supplemented carbonized aerogel. The aerogel absorbs oil from water and supports oil-degrading microorganisms, leading to enhanced biodegradation.

BGU researchers developed an experimental sensor that detects GFAP, a protein associated with brain injury, in 0.5 microlitres of whole blood. A promising sensing result; patient diagnosis remains to be validated. 🟠For the full article>> doi.org/10.1016/j.ce...
Blood is applied to an antibody-coated transistor sensor. The graph shows a stronger GFAP-specific electrical signal as concentration increases, with low non-specific signals. A caption explains the sensor and graph.
