Just finished (and rather enjoyed) this. Despite the deeply AI-skeptical tone I found its take on the situation weirdly heartening. Though I appreciate experts will likely say it WILDLY oversimplifies. But I'm glad for that. Decent read that I got through at a good clip.

Jacket spread for the @bloomsburylit.bsky.social new Blue Humanities handbook now finalized. Doesn't it look lovely?! 600 pages of some of the finest folks working in the field. It's the most comprehensive overview to date. What an achievement! @stevementz.bsky.social @serpiloppermann.bsky.social
Image shows a jacket spread (front and back) for the Bloomsbury Handbook to the Blue Humanities. The jacket is an overhead shot of a body of water and land and the back jacket is grey and turquoise. Blurb reads:

The most comprehensive treatment of the emerging discourse of the Blue Humanities to date, this book comprises essays from key figures alongside new voices, creating a navigational map through this new discipline’s formulations and possibilities.
Structured around four parts, Discourses, Networks, Forms and Representations, the Handbook begins by establishing
the critical discourses and theoretical lenses that shape
how we see our planet’s water, and the impact of watery
thinking on disciplinary knowledge. It ranges across the
Indian, Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic and Southern Ocean worlds,
recognising oceans as active, connective systems that
link people, species, ideas, and materials across time and
space. It considers the myriad ways humans encounter
water: salty, fresh, frozen or fluid, out in the world or moving
within human bodies. It also explores artistic practices that
conceptualize human relation to water – visual, sonic, poetic
– and the watery imaginings of artists conjuring an immersive
encounter to bear witness to historical injustice and a climate
crisis that is all too current. Moving beyond Western binaries
of colonial representation, the book includes a diverse range
of contributions and contributors, making it essential reading
for scholars and students of the Blue Humanities.

'Green Dreams' traces the rise of green techno-optimism from postwar fantasies of progress to Silicon Valley manifestos, EV marketing, Big Tech sustainability campaigns, and Hollywood eco-futures. Beautiful eh? @imreszeman.bsky.social @tanner-mirrlees.bsky.social www.bloomsbury.com/green-dreams...
The book's jacket shows a dreamy background of clouds and blue sky, with wind turbines peaking above the clouds. The jacket blurb reads: Electric cars, smart apps, green AI, carbon
capture, solar panels—everywhere we
turn, we’re told technology will save the
planet. Green Dreams shows why that
promise is so compelling, and why it keeps
us chasing solutions that leave the real
causes of the climate crisis untouched.
Blending cultural criticism, political
analysis, and environmental history,
Green Dreams traces the rise of green
techno-optimism from postwar fantasies
of progress to Silicon Valley manifestos,
EV marketing, Big Tech sustainability
campaigns, and Hollywood eco-futures.
Along the way, it exposes the hidden
costs of supposedly “clean” technologies:
extractive mining, exploding energy
demand, ecological destruction, and the
preservation of systems built on endless
growth and consumption. Rather than
rejecting technology outright, Tanner
Mirrlees and Imre Szeman argue that
technological solutions can matter only if
paired with deeper social, political, and
economic transformation. Provocative,
accessible, and sharply argued, Green
Dreams offers a powerful critique of one
of the defining ideologies of our time.
