Working in the garden for an hour or two last night, I suddenly heard tapping noises from inside the house. That’s funny, I thought; I didn‘t think anyone else was home?

Interesting piece IMHO Dutch people are a) very friendly and b) very hard to make friends with Small country, no great tradition of going away to uni or moving around for jobs, very high membership of small local sports clubs etc => if you haven’t known us for fifteen years, you’re not coming in

Story of the day: An ice cream salon in Almere gave away free ice creams as a promotional stunt. It went viral on tiktok and so many kids turned up that the police had to close the store and use dogs to break up the crowd

If you’ve ever screwed up badly at work: spare a thought for the poor staffer organising a panel debate on peace at Erasmus university in the Hague, who accidentally arranged for a Sudanese warlord (the brother of Hemedti) to come and speak, and didn't notice until afterwards nos.nl/artikel/2633...

Useful things are happening recently on the right, with prominent figures drawing a line under the racism: Jacob Rees-Mogg, Nadhim Zahawi, now James Cleverly. Tentative sense of a social and moral norm being re-established.

Fair enough. But I think there’s a big difference between giving a polite reply to burnham and actually making something happen a lot of people in Labour seem to think if you want it, it’ll happen. But actually it’s at the very least going to be a long, slow, complicated process

a lot of 🇬🇧 discussion about rejoining the EU under Burnham still assumes they would be welcomed back with open arms. But that’s is clearly not the case. If you were Macron/Merz, terrified of losing to AfD/Le Pen, why would you rush to make it look as if it’s easy for people to leave and then rejoin?

If you win an election by presenting yourself as the great liberal alternative to the hard right and then immediately go into coalition with Yesilgoz’s VVD then you are inevitably going to piss off a lot of people

Ben Coates @bencoates1.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
yes, probably. Although I think there may also be a number of voters who have gone the other way: tired of Wilders’ bitterness and gone to JA because Eerdmans seems a bit more modern &dynamic. Also maybe inevitable that a party which was in power a year ago is less popular than ones which weren’t

I think about this interview with the distinguished philosopher Conan O'Brien a lot. I actually think this is a healthy way to live your life! www.nytimes.com/2019/01/14/a...
Is this how you want to go out, with a show that gets smaller and smaller until it’s gone?

Maybe that’s O.K. I think you have more of a problem with that than I do. [Laughs.] At this point in my career, I could go out with a grand, 21-gun salute, and climb into a rocket and the entire Supreme Court walks out and they jointly press a button, I’m shot up into the air and there’s an explosion and it’s orange and it spells, “Good night and God love.” In this culture? Two years later, it’s going to be, who’s Conan? This is going to sound grim, but eventually, all our graves go unattended.

You’re right, that does sound grim.

Sorry. Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think that’s what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

One of Burnham’s biggest strengths is that he just seems to like Britain and the people in it and enjoys the prospect of helping them - which is much rarer than it should be. Almost every other world leader looks like they’d rather be somewhere else

Some admirable things here but if you are already PM, pledging to scrap the triple lock, reform social care, reform the electoral system and reset Europe etc really means a lot less if you are actually pledging to do these things *in 2030 if you win the next election* www.bbc.com/news/live/c6...
