The 2018 Rockets Game 7 is even more revealing. They took fewer 3s than usual. But pace cratered: 90 poss/48 vs. 98 regular season. 3PT rate effect: −0.6% variance (it reduced variance) Pace effect: +4.8% variance Their 3PT strategy wasn't the problem. The brutal slowdown was.

For the Celtics Game 7. They shot 53% of their shots from 3 (47% regular season) and played at 95 poss/48 min (98 reg season). 3Pr: +1.1% variance Pace: +2.4% variance The slow pace had more than twice the magnifying effect. They lost because they shot badly and the pace made it far worse.

Analyzing the last 10 seasons of NBA game-level ortg, its clear that more 3s does increase variance, but the effect is small. Pace has 6× the impact of 3PT rate. And playoff pace is 3–5 possessions slower than the regular season. +1% in 3Pr → +0.1% ORTG variance -1% in pace → +0.6% ORTG variance

At 39 yrs old, Chris Paul led the NBA last season in passes to shooters per 100 possession at 32.6 (min 1000 shots created). He starts off this season defending his crown, creating 13 shots in 15 min or 44.8 shots per 100. (Harden not far behind with 43.1 shots/100).
